Advantages: Small, Efficient, Easy to use, Good for presentations or parties
Disadvantages: Useless for everyday computer use
The Apple remote comes with many of the modern day Macs however is an add on option for the laptops and certain versions. The Apple Remote is primarily used to control the Front Row media centre, which is present in current Macs on the leopard operating system. The remote is used to wirelessly flick between music, videos and photos.
The Apple Remote is designed similarly to the iPod shuffle as it is of similar size with similar buttons. Rather than having a scroll wheel, the Apple Remote consists purely of buttons used to control Front Row. It is ideal for parties and presentations as you can wirelessly control your media. The remote is small - 3cm x 8.5cm x 0.8cm. It has a black panel at the front where the infa-red waves are sent out from. All Macs have a receiver for this so the remote is fully compatible with all Macs. The remote was later designed to magnetically stick to the side of the Mac G5. On the back is an Apple logo engraved into the white interface.
The top side of the remote contains all the buttons used to control your media. An initial circle has the play/pause buttons in the centre with buttons either side in an outer circle to skip/fast foward/rewind media and buttons above and below to control volume level. Just below this part is the menu button, which is used to access the Front Row interface and exit. The remote is small and light so is very efficient to use. With a modern colour scheme, it also matches the latest Macs.
You can find this remote on amazon.co.uk for around £15 at its cheapest price. I would not recommend buying this (unless it comes with the Mac you are buying) as I never use it myself with my Mac that I use as an everyday computer for work/internet/fun. However, if you are using your Mac for presentations such as videos or even at parties to play music, then the Apple Remote is ideal for you and I would recommend it.
