The Apple Remote first started coming packaged as a standard option with the last of the iMac G5 computers and was initially used to control Front Row. This proved to be a really clever idea, unlike the Microsoft Media Centre remotes of the time it had only six buttons rather than 30 or more. This means that you don't have to have a PHD to work out what to do.

It all works on infrared so you do need line of sight to activate the controlled utility but generally that's not a problem. You can also pair the remote to work with only a specific device so you don't have to worry if you have several remotes in the same room.

The remote can also be bought separately for £18 as a spare, or to go with the universal iPod Dock to control iPods hooked up to separate speakers. It can also be used to control the AppleTV which is essentially a home media system but that's a separate subject, all of this is done with the same 6 buttons.

Power comes from a single CR2032 cell which lasts for years at a time, unlike AA's in most other remotes. Installation isn't needed, just point and press.

Summary: The easiest remote control on the market, and cross compatible on many devices.
