All too often I have tried to replace my myriad of remote controls with an uber expensive all-in-one remote. I have tried the touch screen type and even the Harmony remotes. Yes, they are good, but overly complicated a lot of the time. When it comes to general family use too, it is important to have something easy to use.
The URC 7556 claims to control every device on the market by using preset codes to access the right piece of equipment. Up to five pieces of equipment can be assigned to the remote and I have to say it is really really easy to set up. You simply push the device button (eg. SAT), then hold the Magic button for a few seconds, then key in the code from the supplied table. You then try to power on/off the device, if it works you have done it. If it doesn't you try another code. Simple as that!
I set up a Samsung TV, Amstrad Satellite box and an Onkyo receiver in about two minutes, all working fine. To control each device you simply push one of the five buttons on the top section of the remote. Another nice feature for Sky users, you have the red, green, yellow, blue, guide and backup buttons. This might not sound like much, but even some expensive remotes don't have these.
I tested both the silver and black model of this remote and the only negative I can think of is that the buttons feel a little slippery. At least this silver model does not show all those fingerprints. Other than that, this is superb value for money.
