Advantages: Cheap. An Essential & Useful Item.
Disadvantages: Poor Build Quality,
If your lucky enough to own an extremely steady tripod (the kind that costs hundreds of pounds and weighs as much as a small child,) or if your camera or lens has a decent image stabiliser, then the chances you won't really need a remote control shutter. Your tripod when used with the cameras self timer will most likely be more than enough to allow you to capture shake free photos, regardless of any environmental factors such as wind.
If however, you're like me, in that you have a pretty standard tripod, and take a lot of macro photography, or photos with a high ISO or long shutter speed, then simply pressing the shutter button can result in an slightly blurred image. Therefore I decided to invest in this remote shutter and for the most part I'm glad I did. While I have a few worries with this item, I would still say that it is an essential gadget, that when used means you don't have to worry about whether or not the photo is going to turn out, and therefore you can spend more time on composing the photo itself. The shutter button on the remote can be pressed halfway for auto-focus. The long cable is also useful. It means that you don't have to be stuck behind your camera while taking a photo. This allows you for example to direct an model, or portrait subject more freely.
There are a few failings with this shutter release. The very cheap price means you shouldn't be expecting a great deal, but I do have concerns over the actual build quality, as the plastic casing seems a little flimsily. This may pose a real problem if your an outdoor, all weather photographer. The long cable (while useful) also seems to have an uncanny knack of tangling itself up.
But still anything that makes a photographers life a bit easier or helps improve photos can't be a bad thing. This remote control shutter while not perfect is still worth it.
