shuttlex Pioneer DVD 116: ... I purchased this Pioneer DVD 116 drive as an upgrade to my previous NEC DVD burner. In the early days of DVD burners, drives used to cost in excess of £100, however gradually prices have become lower and lower. The reason I chose to upgrade to this Pioneer drive is its reliability for burning dual layer DVDR discs. While most burners are supposedly able to perform this operation from the specs, in reality ma...

... to install and as easy to use as any CD-R, CD-RW or CD-type data drive. What more can I say? Well let me try, it's a great bit of kit and that has that wooo factore built-right in there. The drive operates at single speed normally but with a software patch is brought up to 2-speed with the appropriate type of DVD-R media. What this means in reality is that a drive that normally burns 4.7GB of data in 1 hour can do it in 30 minutes. Wow. If you head out and buy some Bulkpaq disks that means you're probably burngin 4.7 GB for about 50p, that's the same per megabyte as the cheap of cheap CD media. Nice. The drive itself has been very reliable and ha...

spe001 Pioneer DVR A03 drive
... just purchased the Pioneer 104 DVD-RW and I have to say its fantastic! The 104 is the OEM version (comes without software)of the Pioneer A04 which is a slightly updated version of the a03 although there appears to be very little difference between the A03 and the A04 I paid about £200 including VAT for the drive from an internet reseller. I have seen the drive retail for slightly less on the major auction sites but was a bit warey for what is quite a major purchase for me. It took me about 10 minutes to install in my PC and most of that was because I couldn't find a screwdriver to take the side pannel off. I have so far only tried 2 pieves of sof...

neepheid Pioneer DVD 106S
... had a horrible run of luck with a Toshiba DVD-ROM drive (see my dabs.com story for the gruesome details), so I got this one. I thought the slot drive looked really cool and had heard good things about this drive. Everything was true. The speed is excellent, the slot takeup of discs is just right - not so slow that you feel like you're shoving it in, but not so fast that it gobbles the disc out of your hand like a sugar cube deficient donkey. It has been 100% reliable so far and performs good digital audio extraction (a must for listening to CDs properly and for ripping to MP3). If I had to make a complaint, it's all too easy to leave a disc in the drive...
