Due to a testing system we still rely on at work, odd being everything else is top of the range, we are required to use Floppy Disks for the uploading and saving of test scores and results. Hence we have a wide variety of models in the office and the one we use most commonly and seem to have the best results with is the Toshiba USB floppy disk drive.
This retailed for £79 when we bought it in a local PC store and it for what it is, it is good value. Floppy Disks went out of fashion a long time ago but they can still have their uses and for these purposes this is one of the fastest, most reliable disk readers I have used.
The first plus point is the ease at which it sets itself up. No installation needed, no initial loading or anything along those lines, you simply plug it into the USB connectors and away you go. It reads on your Pc or laptop like any other device USB wise. No need to turn off your computer or have any software on board just insert the disk drive and you are away.
Considering the dated technology in play this loads pretty fast. Obviously as with all floppy devices there is a larger than usual reading time as the disk clicks in. One side here is the problem these have always had which is the noise. Not ideal in a room where others are doing tests but cannot be helped. Loading and saving takes 10-15 seconds each time depending on the file and of course it is no where near as instant as USB flash drives but nevertheless it has a need to be used at my work.
It has been very well performing and very reliable. Previous models we had used had simply failed to read disks, caused memory loss and failed to save correctly but this works a treat. There is no waiting around, as soon as the green light goes off to indicate its saving you can unplug and your data is save.
Its all very solid and compact, well made of a tough durable plastic with a short extension cord (may cause a problem if you want to leave it plugged in) but this makes it easy to store and very portable.
In essence, even though floppy disks are dated and unused technology to a larger extent, if like myself you still have a need to use these then this model has been one of the fastest, most reliable and solid pieces of kit I have came across. Cheap and cheerful!
