RiDisc DVD-R's
by Seven17
These are the most expensive DVD's I have ever bought costing around £25 per tub of 100 but the good news is, you get what you pay for. The audio playback is superb in every way, very high quality 128KBps+ MP3's sound sharp, refined, and lower bass frequencies don't wobble or loose sound quality. I have added the title Rolls Royce of ... blank DVD's because they cost a bomb but are of very good quality.
Where burning is concerned these are error free discs and rarely have problems. Below i have included a list of buffer under run errors for a few discs to compare these:
Buffer Errors according to Nero Buffer Under run protection:
- about 8 times on Tesco DVD-R's (See my review for the horror's of these discs!)
- about 3 times on Amazon DVD-R's
- usually less than 3 times on Traxdata, Verbatim etc
- 1 or none on RiDisc & Datawrite RED/YELLOW
The data hold is almost exactly 4.7GB all but about 2MB on each disc so bear this in mind when running right up to the limit to avoid over burn which will completely destroy your disc. The files have never corrupted or suffered data loss and are generally"safe" once burned onto these discs. Build quality is good with none of the logo's or ink on top of the disc peeling away or simply melting itself off in a hot dvd drive.
I have never experienced any issues with light surface scratches, they offer good reliability when they do get marked and are easy to read in a DVD drive when they are damaged. They can take a beating and small knocks wont damage them, or shatter the disc.
Video playback is very good with the picture looking sharp and crisp. Video quality is not ruined just by being burned to the disc, audio quality while watching a movie is very good too,no issues with loss of audio or the audio being too quiet.
The burning speed of these DVD's is <16X and burning right up to the speed limit (as i like to call it) does not cause any buffering issues, again you don't need to burn at a slower rate in order to get good results. The discs are easily readable again by any DVD drive and reading speed is no better or worse than other brands. You are paying for the quality of AAA+ discs. Read the complete review |

Datawrite Yellow DVD-R

I have been using these discs for both music and video files burning them as iso, DVD and data discs. They are no different to the DVD+R red ones except they are MINUS R meaning older DVD players and drive writers will be able to cope with them, and read them correctly. I have to admit though that on older DVD players you will expect ... worse quality audio and video so I wont be knocking any marks off there.
These discs are Ok for audio playback, no better than the red +R ones and it makes no difference which ones you use. The bass still sounds a bit flat, without much depth to it, as if it has lost some quality just by being burned on the disc. The problem i have though is that movie quality is fine yet the sound quality during movies is not fantastic, and if you have an ear for audio frequencies and you like your sound in tip top form like i do, then you're going to be disappointed, and I would recommend the RiDisc ones instead.
Burning speed for these DVD-R discs is pretty average and normally takes between 4 and 7 minutes depending on your CD drive write speed and the buffering under run you use. i use Nero and so far have never experienced any buffering or corruption issues after burning.
The durability of these discs is just as good as any other high quality blank DVD, not 100% scratch resistant but it will shrug off light knocks and surface marks. You have to do some serious damage to them for the discs to be unreadable in the drive, and the top ink or paint they use has never come off on any of my discs. They're not built like TuffDisc brand ones but at least they don't shred themselves and render themselves useless after a minor surface scratch.
Playback speed is good, no better or worse than any other blank DVD-R's and they work fine in much older DVD players. The discs read fairly fast and then continue to play without errors, glitching or skipping. The discs also come in a fairly easy to open cake tin which is just a plastic see through pot, filled with the discs.
Overall these are good discs, not great for MP3 playback at 128KBps as i feel they loose oomph where bass is concerned but these are still highly recommended discs if you're not too fussed about that. Read the complete review |

Datawrite Red DVD+R Blank Discs
by Seven17
Over the years I have purchased thousands of blank CD's and DVD's and the best ones i have come across are in fact, RiDisc ones. These discs are not quite as good for audio playback but are very reliable and I personally have never experienced issues related to buffering, corrupting or loosing data.
So the first thing to note ... is that these are not as good as the RiDisc AAA+ DVD±R's (which cost just pennies more) and i find give better audio playback in a DVD player. I burn DVD's with music files on which can be played in a DVD player at 128KBps, and have noticed that these do not give the same depth of the sound, particularly bass frequencies. The MP3's sound great on the computer in high quality audio, and still sound great in the DVD player on the RiDisc ones, but they sound like they have lost their quality just by being burned on these discs?
All files types on the disc are burned quite nicely though, without causing them to corrupt or "go funny" as it were. The video playback is relatively good compared to some of the much cheaper brands i buy and where picture quality is concerned these are great but where audio quality is concerned, again it sounds like the quality has dropped simply by being burned to these discs.
Burning is great with these, at full speed of 16x they burn quickly and without fault. I have had 1 duff disc out of 100 so far and that's good going given that all discs no matter what quality, have buffering issues at some point. The burning is done effectively and whilst over burn will ruin the disc, they do fill up to the brim quite nicely.
Usually with just a couple MB's to go, some discs will over burn despite claiming to have 4700mb, yet you burn 4699mb, and that's because not all cheaper discs are exactly equal. These are quite good value for money at around £10 per tub of 50 and all discs are equal and will fill up to that over burn limit without claiming to be full. Sometime's as i know to well, that 1MB is very important, unless you want to burn another disc.
These are good quality and good value for money discs and i would recommend them but if you are happy to spend more money and want better discs for your precious stuff like family photo's, buy the RiDisc DVD±R ones which are pretty much the Rolls Royce of blank DVD's.
