Advantages: Superb quality of picture.

Disadvantages: Buying greater quantities saves you money, making the 25 packs expensive.

I am tired of paying over the odds for discs, and since having my new computer, my need for DVD-Roms has increased, making the usual supplies bought in supermarkets too expensive for me to even consider. Checking around the internet, I found that Philips produced DVD roms in packs of 25 at a very decent price of just over 6 GBP a pack. Compared with the supermarkets, and even taking into account the price of postage, these really were a good deal.

I have always used Verbatim discs, and wanted to give Philips a try. I wasn't expecting any difference in quality, or speed of recording, although what I got surprised me. I bought four packs, and made a saving on postage, and proceeded to start writing recorded television programs onto the discs. One of the reasons I want this feature is that very soon, we shall have television broadcast through the computer, and I want to be ready to record programs to disc as and when I want to.

The discs come neatly stored in a 'Cake Box', and I rather like this idea for storage, and don't want to pay extra to have the standard plastic cases, since they are of little use to me. I tend to store movies in individual pouches to save space, so it wasn't an issue that there were no cases supplied.
These are discs that give 120 minutes of space or 4.7 GB which can be recorded at speeds up to 16X, which means very little to me.

With cheap discs, what I found in the past was that you literally get what you pay for, and my time is too valuable to have to record things more than once because of disc failure. I gave up using cheap discs ages ago, after some would not record, and others would not play on the DVD player. These discs represent an improvement for me in that in comparison with the Verbatim ones, they do seem to record at a faster speed, using the same program and the same size of files.

One of these discs holds a compressed movie, depending of course upon file size, or two episodes of a television series, and what it produced was an exceptionally good quality copy that can be played in my dvd player. It surprised me that quality differs so much from make to make, and whereas the Verbatim ones did give a superb picture, I did a comparison test of recording the same program twice, once on verbatim and once on these, and the Philips were faster, the pictures were a much nicer colour, and the discs were about equal with Verbatim in quality and scratch resistance.

Although I shall stick to the Verbatim for my light scribe needs, since I have already bought them, I shall certainly be using the Philips discs for day to day recordings because the price is better, the quality equal, though the speed certainly an improvement on the Verbatim ones, although I do notice that Philips produce a light scribe dvd rom now as well, and really are offering competition to Verbatim.

My advice – stick to good quality. Don't opt for cheap. These certainly impressed me.

Available in 25, 50, 100 and 200 Packs. Interestingly enough, there are real bargains to be had out there and the 100 pack really is good news at an amazing price of 19 GBP. Possibly my only mistake in ordering these was not checking around and realising the huge difference in price between buying 4 of these packs as against one of the hundred packs, though I shan't make that mistake again.
