Advantages: Able to etch via laser onto the surface
Disadvantages: Image tended to fade after some time
I recently purchased an external lightscribe drive so I purchased the Verbatin Lightscribe CD-R to try the lightscribe drive out.
Now lightscribe is a technology that allows you to etch via a laser, a picture or text or basically any design onto specially coated lightscribe cd or dvd media.
Having burned your information onto cd you are then ready to design a label or whatever you want onto the lightscribe cd.
You do this by simply flipping the lightscribe cd over and placing in back in the same lightscribe drive. Effectively placing it upside down. Then you open up your preferred software to design an image or text to etch onto the specially coated cd.
The laser then burns whatever image or text or design you have chosen directly onto the lightscribe cd.
There are usually two or three settings for this process:
1 fast
2 normal
3 best
If you choose the best option then the process can take nearly 20 - 25 minutes to complete.
After that, you pop the disc out of the drive and you should have a professional looking design imprinted onto the cover of your cd or dvd.
The Verbatim Lightscribes come in a gold colour as standard, but as the technology becomes more widespread companies are now using various other colours other than the gold.
I dont know whether this is an issue just with the Verbatim CD's or whether its a general complaint to all manufacturers of these lightscribe discs, but I find that over time the inscribed designs do tend to fade a lot. I know this isn't happening through constant handling and rough use because I look after my Cd's and DVD's and place them in special albums.
Other than that, this technology and these Verbatim discs seem a good marriage.
The actual Verbatim CD's themselves record and play data as equally good as any of the other "higher branded" manufacturers out there!
Summary: Good quality discs that have the ability to be labelled with a professional look
