      Good natural looking substrate, I prefer cat litter, though.

      I have owned a variety of different snakes over the years and currently have quite a large corn snake. I have tried many different substrates and have found I usually use woodbased cat litter. It does a good job, but it isnt the most attractive of substrates and it expands noticably and becomes very powdery and a pain to clean up when it does become soiled. this particular substrate is very attractive and gives a natural appearance to the vivarium. It is basically wood and bark chippings that have been washed and so it is a very clean product to use.

      Euro Rep Limited produce many different reptile related products such as heats mats, bowls and lamps. The bark keeps the tank quite humid and is very good at absorbing water. When I put cool water into the bowl he likes to immediately go straight into it and curl up in the cool water, so there is always a lot of water spilt and this substrate is useful for this.

      The bag states the natural bark chips are for almost all reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, it is superb when used wet or dry. It is safe and hygenic, economical to use, biodegradable and can be misted daily to create high humidities. What this means is that you can use a spray gun with a fine mist to dampen the substrate and create a more humid atmosphere for your pet.

      Overall, I do personally prefer using cat litter. Yes, it might not be anywhere near as attractive as more natuarl looking substrates, but it is extremely cheap compare to the bark chippings and I find it easier to maintain and spot areas which need changing.

      a must have substrate for all reptiles that require humidity

      I have a Yemen Chameleon and i recentley purchased 2 bags of the 10l of this coarse substrate. i found that the bags contained large amounts of the bark, i found it covered my chameleons enclosure with a good covering of a few inches. i found that this substrate was different from others that i have purchased in the past, this is because unlike others this has already been cleaned so it doesnt leave your reptile all dirty and covered in mud. i have also found that this substrate is excellent for reptiles that require a high level of humidity as the bark is able to absorb high levels of water. The water that is retained enables the bark to stay moist and help keep the humidity levels up. in addition the choice between coarse and fine is great as some reptiles may not need to have high humidity so the fine would be used as this will hold less water than the coarse version.

      Great substarte for lizards

      Now for anyone who has read my review 'My Mate Murph' you will be aware that I am the proud owner of a little gecko who I have had for four years now. This review is about one of the many things I have bought over the years to make his life that little more comfortable.... bark.

      Murph has a tank which he lives in and to make him feel at home and to give the tank a rather good rainforest look the tank floor is covered with Euro Rep Rain Forest Advanced Vivarium Substrate. This is basically wood and bark chippings that are specifically produced for exotic pet species and is different from the normal garden bark that you may buy from a local garden centre.

      I would not be suitable to use garden bark for a pets tank because it contains many impurities such as fungus and bacteria which could cause infection to any animal that came into contact it with it and since many reptiles and other exotics such as spiders are sensitive to their environment the consequences could be fatal.

      On the bag it gives the following information.

      * Natural bark chips for almost all reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
      * Superb when used wet or dry
      * Safe and hygienic
      * Biodegradable
      * Economical to use
      * Trusted by zoos, veterinary surgeons and other professionals worldwide
      * Can be misted daily to create high humilities.

      The product is produced by a company called Euro Rep Limited who produce many things to help care for reptiles such as heat mats, lamps, bowls and housing. They are a well known company amongst herpetologists and many pet stores stock their products.

      The reason I like the bark so much is that it is really good at keeping the tank nice at humid, which in turn makes a more active and happier lizard. The best way to make sure the tank is humid is to spray bark daily with water so that its nice and damp and the heat sources will do the rest. The bark also lasts an extremely long time and really only needs to be thrown out if it has been soiled by the lizards. I find that a 5 litre bag easily covers the tank flooring with some left over for replacing the soiled areas.

      The bark can be bought in most large pet shops that specialise in exotic pets with 5 litre bags being the most commonly sold volume. These bags cost about £4 but of course the larger the bag the better value for money you will get.

      I have used this brand for years and really I see no reason as to why I would change. The substrate is of a high quality and contains a mixture of large chippings and small ones which means you can have a much more interesting design in the tank.

      For example I tend to place the larger pieces of bark in the areas where I feed the lizard so that he is less likely to get bark in his mouth when he is eating.

      This is a truly great product and I can't recommend it enough.
