      Not very natural looking.

ABOUT: Habistat Paper Flakes are made from 100% recycled paper and are a good alterntive to other substrate used in snake vivariums. When we got our 2nd snake we actually purchase some of these paper flakes to go in te terrarium as they were recommended to us by the shop owner. The paper flakes are hygienic and have minimal dust unlike some wood substrates and they are super absorbant and also easy to clean. They are also biodegradable and are non toxic and non abrasive.

PRICE: Prices vary but expect to pay around £6.05 for a 1KG bag which can be purchase from most reptile stores online and offline.

IN USE: You get a lot of paper flakes in the bag and they do tend to fluff up quite a big as well so you do get a lot for your money. We used a whole bag in the snake viarium as it was quite big and we wanted to ensure that it was covered well. The paper flakes don't look as nice as wood or bark substrate and to be honest it doesn't look very natural either. Although it states the product is hygienic we found that when it came to cleaning we have to remove large areas of the paper flakes to ensure that we had cleaned it properly and weren't leaving behind any soiled bits of paper which can cause the vivarium to smell.

Our snake seemed happy with the paper flakes in there although he did manage to get quite a few in the water bowl when moving around the vivarium and exploring. We also found that when he came to taking the snake out for feeding the paper does make quite a big of mess on the floor. In the end we decided to change the paper flakes to bark which now looks natural and we think our snake prefers it as well. It's also easier to clean as well and makes less mess although it does prove more dusty than the paper flakes.

OVERALL: Probably better suited to a smaller snake.
