On a recent weekend away in Totes, Devon, we had a few hours wandering around Totnes town centre and decided to try out this delightful looking restaurant and tea room named Anne of Cleves. The cakes displayed in the window looked REALLY inviting and we decided to pop in for some tea and scones/cakes.
For those of you who've no idea where Totnes is, it's a small market town near the River Dart in Devon. It's about 20 miles from Exeter. According to legend, Totnes is where Brutus of Troy first set foot on what is now known as the Brutus Stone, Brutus of Troy being the founder of Britain, according to myth.
~ABOUT ANNE OF CLEVES~
Anne of Cleves Restaurant and Tearooms has been at this location since the 1970s and for 60 years prior to that it was also a tea room. The restaurant is sited within a grade 2 listed Elizabethan building.
Anne of Cleves provides morning coffees, breakfast and brunch, lunches including sandwiches and hot meals, children's meals and a selection of cream teas, scones, cakes and gateaux.
Our group of 5 was seated within moments by the very friendly waitress. We noted that all of the waitresses were dressed in quaint matching uniforms and they were all very cheerful and happy to make recommendations on what to order.
As a group we order scones, almond cake, Victoria sponge and tea cakes with a variety of specialist tea, herbal tea and I ordered a Diet Coke.
We noted that the Anne of Cleves had a very authentic old fashioned feel to it with oak beams and dainty looking crockery.
As it was late afternoon, we advised that we couldn't order food but only bakery items, which was fine with us as that's what we had come in for. There were a handful of other tables occupied and we started checking out the beverages menu and asked for suggestions about which cakes were good and the staff were only too happy to tell us what was available and also that the cake of the day was Victoria sponge. We decided to order a mixture of items.
Everyone in our group was delighted with their choice and I really enjoyed the quite large slice of Victoria sponge that I was presented with. My friends were all very happy with the various teas they ordered and we had a leisurely time there, and didn't feel at all rushed to finish and leave the premises even though it was around closing time by the time we'd finished.
The toilets were well maintained although they were up on the first floor. I'm not sure what facilities are available for disabled customers as I didn't spot any toilets on ground/street level.
Please note that Anne of Cleves is not open in the evenings; I have listed the opening times at the end of the review.
