According to the Burger Monkey blog Automat serves the best bugers in London. And as something of a burger conoissieur myself, I felt I had to try one!
The restaurant is tucked down a quiet little side street in Mayfair, and from the front appears tobe very small. But as you go through, it opens right up and is actually much larger than first thought.
It is in the style of an America diner/bistro. With a few seats at the bar, some booths and some small tables it is really cute. The decor is plain but inviting, and classic.
The reception staff do not give a great first impression, they are rather abrupt and not the friendliest. But don't let this put you off as the rest of the staff are attentive and helpful.
We had a great little table, which although tucked into a corner, provided a great opportunity for me to people watch! I like to see what everyone else is having.
The brunch menu had a decent range of option, including the standard breakfast/brunch items, burgers, pancakes, salad, a pasta option and a macaroni cheese option. Very American diner style!
We were there at 12noon for the brunch and started off with a couple of champagne cocktails. Yum! The order was taken quickly, and arrived quickly. At which point they took our food order. Both of us opted for the burger, me well-done and my boyfriend medium rare.
When the burgers arrived our eyes lit up! They were huge with a mroe than generous helping of crispy fries on the side. The burgers do not come with sauce, but they are all provided so you add it to your own liking.
I have to confess my burger was perhaps a little over cooked even for me, and the medium-rare seemed a little too rare, but they were incredibly tasty! The bun toasted to perfection with lettuce, onion, tomato and a large slice of gherkin in the middle.
We both finished our burgers, and were offered a coffee and dessert menu, but we were both bursting at the seams so couldn't fit anything in.
The bill came to just under £45 for the two burgers and the cocktails plus 12.5% service charge, and a little extra tip thrown in. For a treat this is a great place to go, but not something you would do every weekend.
The people in the restsurant ranged in ages, and it seemed like the kind of place for everyone to go and hang out. They do not rush you, and although we were told we could have the table for an hour and a half, we really didn't need it that long.
There is no dress code, but I would suggest smart casual as you are in Mayfair afterall!
