I've been going to Back inn Time since i moved to Chelmsford three years ago - it had a great reputation so i thought i would give it a try and it didn't let me down.
The staff are really friendly and even though the first time i went was a busy Thursday night they made sure i got a table as quickly as they could and whilst i waited the barman made me a cocktail from the extensive list. I've been going ever since and now i love their Coors Light which they serve in ice cold glasses - the perfect refreshing beer.
The decor is like an American diner and they have lots of memorabilia all over the restaurant and the table have red gingham style tableclothes and have ketchup in a tomato bottle and French's american style mustard which all adds to the atmosphere.
I'm a really fussy eater but i'm not short of choice here. For a starter i usually go for the stuffed potato skins with cheese and bacon - they're quote substantial so make sure you're hungry. Or i also love the baby ribs as a starter or the chicken fingers - all delicious and come with your choice of sauce.
For a main i used to religiously go for the chicken and ribs combo but recently i have been a bit more adventurous and tried some of their steaks - the big steak is huge and hasn't beaten me yet (although i can't usually manage the chips or anything else on the plate with it!). I also love their burgers!
Dessert wise i'm usually too stuffed but if you want something refreshing after all that go for their selection of sorbets. They usually have blackcurrant, lemon or mango and you can mix the three flavours as you please.
If you've got a big appetite and fancy some decent food i recommend trying Back Inn Time
I've been going to Back Inn Time for years and it has a great reputation in town with over 25 years in Chelmsford! It can be a little difficult to find as the entrance is actually at the back of the property. You are always greeted by some old motown or popular music hits and inside the decor is like an American Diner with memorabilia all over the walls and they even have a little train that speeds round!
The staff (some of which have been there for years) are always polite, helpful, friendly and i really couldn't rate them more highly although we are regulars so always get treated really exceptionally.
It's best to book as they are always busy. They open for lunch between 12 and 3 except on Sunday when they are open all day from midday. In the evenings they are open 6 until late but as i say it's best to book to avoid disappointment. That said they always do their best to fit you in.
Their cocktail list is amazing - i would recommend the PS I Love You or one of their Pina Coladas. If none of them take your fancy just ask the bartender to make you something up and they will!
As i say i go here regularly with my boyfriend and we love it! For starter i recommend the caesar salad (i like mine with chicken and bacon) but you can also ask for this as a main course too, or the small baby back ribs, bacon and cheese potato skins or the brie bop a lula. The prawn cocktail is also very good but if we're not feeling too hungry we just get some cheesy garlic bread to share. For mains there's a wide variety of choice...I like the breast of the times which is chicken with bbq sauce and bacon etc, they also do a combo of ribs and chicken which is delicious and very filling. The burgers are all fantastic and my boyfriend usually opts for the swiss burger. As for desserts we cant usually manage but they do a huge sharing dessert full of ice cream and toffee sauce and brownie - yum yum! You'll never manage a three course meal here as it's just so filling and huge portions!
Prices are reasonable and once you have been you receive a 50% off voucher with your bill which entitles you to 50% off all food from sun-thus meaning you can get a two course meal for around ten pounds a head! It's a really great deal!
They also do a fantastic lunch deal which is five pounds for two courses.
The only problem i have ever had at Back Inn Time was when we ordered a burger and unfortunately they has run out of their home-made burgers and served a frozen one (obviously it came out hot but the quality wasn't the same which was disappointing).
It's a great place for a birthday celebration and anyone that's been will tell you that the staff all get together to sing you happy birthday in their very own back-inn-time style which is quite famous! And the birthday boy or girl also gets a fairy cake with a candle to make a wish!
This is a restaurant that really has stood the test of time, having been around since the '80s-i dont think the decor has even been changed much, yet it is still one of the best places to eat out in chelmsford. Its a place you will have to book a table for at the weekend, as its quite small and places get booked up at premium times.
It serves all types of american style foods, from fajhitas to burgers-last time i went i had rack of ribs and fries, and it was amazing. The ribs were so tender they melt in the mouth and are covered in a tasty sticky barbeque sauce, and the fries come with a seasoning on them that im not sure what it is, but it makes the fries extra crispy and taste great.
the decoration inside is a complete collage of american artefacts, from roadsigns to a real working mini train that is near the ceiling and makes its way round the restaurant. The outside is traditional white with black beams and a big clock that goes anticlockwise as its sign.
I had my 18th birthday meal there with around 10 friends and family, and somebody had given a cake for them to bring out. Now this is something that they specialise in, as they turn most of the lights and the music (which is always quite loud-and sometimes plays the odd disney song) and all the waiters/waitresses gather round and shout happy birthday to you, to make sure everyone in the restaurant can hear it! It was quite embarassing for me, but it is funny and it fits in with the atmosphere of the place-its really lively-DEFINATELY not suitable for a romantic meal for 2!
The only downside i can think of is that the tables are really close together as its a small restaurant. The prices arent the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive-my ribs and chips cost around £10.00.
And if you go, the bar does some great cocktails!
One of Chelmsford's best and most fun restaurants is the American themed Back In Time which has been serving delighted customers since 1986. Its a lively place with an enormous sense of fun and can probably be considered to be one of Chelmsford's landmarks because most people comment on the large clock which hangs outside with its hands revolving anti-clockwise instead of the usual direction. No doubt it is this gimmick which tempts many in to the restaurant in the first place but its the atmosphere and the great food and prices which keeps them coming back and makes them so popular. It is well advised to book in advance if you are intending to go along with a group of friends because they are usually very busy no matter what day of the week it is. The food is all American inspired as is the decor. You get the choice of such things as big old steaks, racks of ribs, burgers or fajitas, chili and the like to give you a taste of the Deep South and Mexico as well as salads and the like to satisfy vegetarian tastes. The menu isn't the most awe inspiring to be fair and the choices aren't over-whelming but the food is good and it comes at a price which is appealing - a 1lb steak at £13.95 can't be bad! The sense of fun continues into the menu where the dishes are given such names as "The Big Rib Off" for a full rack of ribs, or the "What No Meat?" for a veggie burger and the staff are lively and friendly too. There is also a comprehensive kids menu for the little 'uns and they are well catered for in terms of facilities. Its a good family restaurant, the place to come for a fun casual meal rather than one of those romantic candlelight affairs or a business lunch. Getting to Back Inn Time is relatively easy. its about a five minute walk from the bus and train stations and if you are coming by car you'l be pleased to know that there is a little free parking space directly outside the restaurant and more close
by, or if you get really pushed for a place, there is always the large car-park at Chelmsford's Riverside leisure centre which is 2 minutes away. They have a bar here as well, but be warned that drinks are only licensed with food, so its not the place to come to get mashed...which is a good thing seeing as it neighbours Chelmsford cop shop! Definitely not the area to get drunk and disorderly in unless you fancy a little free accomodation for the night but certainly a great restaurant for a fun, casual night out. ~Contact Details~ Back-Inn Time Victoria Road Chelmsford Tel: 01245 269 983 ~Example Menu~ (may be outdated but it gives you an idea: ~Kids~ Chow Time(Dinner For Grown Ups) £3.75 All served with chips/baked potatoes and baken beans.
