Best American diner in Essex (Back-In Time)

Advantages: Huge portions and great staff

I've been going to Back Inn Time for years and it has a great reputation in town with over 25 years in Chelmsford! It can be a little difficult to find as the entrance is actually at the back of the property. You are always greeted by some old motown or popular music hits and inside the decor is like an American Diner with memorabilia all over the walls and they even have a little train that speeds round!

The staff (some of which have been there for years) are always polite, helpful, friendly and i really couldn't rate them more highly although we are regulars so always get treated really exceptionally.

It's best to book as they are always busy. They open for lunch between 12 and 3 except on Sunday when they are open all day from midday. In the evenings they are open 6 until late but as i say it's best to book to avoid disappointment. That said they always do their best to fit you in.

Their cocktail list is amazing - i would recommend the PS I Love You or one of their Pina Coladas. If none of them take your fancy just ask the bartender to make you something up and they will!

As i say i go here regularly with my boyfriend and we love it! For starter i recommend the caesar salad (i like mine with chicken and bacon) but you can also ask for this as a main course too, or the small baby back ribs, bacon and cheese potato skins or the brie bop a lula. The prawn cocktail is also very good but if we're not feeling too hungry we just get some cheesy garlic bread to share. For mains there's a wide variety of choice...I like the breast of the times which is chicken with bbq sauce and bacon etc, they also do a combo of ribs and chicken which is delicious and very filling. The burgers are all fantastic and my boyfriend usually opts for the swiss burger. As for desserts we cant usually manage but they do a huge sharing dessert full of ice cream and toffee sauce and brownie - yum yum! You'll never manage a three course meal here as it's just so filling and huge portions!

Prices are reasonable and once you have been you receive a 50% off voucher with your bill which entitles you to 50% off all food from sun-thus meaning you can get a two course meal for around ten pounds a head! It's a really great deal!

They also do a fantastic lunch deal which is five pounds for two courses.

The only problem i have ever had at Back Inn Time was when we ordered a burger and unfortunately they has run out of their home-made burgers and served a frozen one (obviously it came out hot but the quality wasn't the same which was disappointing).

It's a great place for a birthday celebration and anyone that's been will tell you that the staff all get together to sing you happy birthday in their very own back-inn-time style which is quite famous! And the birthday boy or girl also gets a fairy cake with a candle to make a wish!
