Wonderful food and wine. Warm welcome from friendly staff. The local lamb shank is delicious.
During the day it's just an ordinary antique shop selling Coronation mugs and clay pipes, but in the evening it becomes the best restaurant for miles around! While sitting in the cellar bar perusing the menu, I always think "I must try the pheasant, or kangaroo" but almost every time order the Wild boar, preceded by Port and Stilton Pate. And though I tend to think it's rude not to sample their selection of fine wines, my order is invariably Theakstons Olde Peculiar. When the starter arrives you can almost taste the vintage port before even picking up your cutlery - the quality of the cheese also leaping out at the first mouthful. Then the wild boar arrives, well marinated and coated in peppercorns, accompanied by 4 different types of potato with succulent and very fresh vegetables. It's difficult to describe just how good it is but I have eaten in substantially more expensive places which haven't approached the subtlety of flavour and obvious care that has gone into the preparation. And if you're a fan of Good Old British Puddings like me, you'll be unable to resist the Bread and Butter pud - as far as I'm concerned the best I've eaten. And the price? £25 per head. PS booking advisable summer weekends - 01766-890543. They do B&B as well!
