“ Restaurant and Bar. 492/494 Union Street, Aberdeen. Tel = +44(0)1224-636331. „
i went to Beluga with my girlfriend and a couple of friends for dinner and to check out the new live music, on that night there was a great band playing some cool music in the corner, nothing to loud, which was enjoyable as we were still able to chat amongst ourselves. Food was as good as any top resteraunt in the area.Another great feature is the large boothes and friendly staff.
If you have ever been at the Holburn Street end of Union Street you can't miss 'Beluga'. For those that are familiar with Aberdeen and its pubs, 'Beluga' is where 'The Soda Fountain' used to be. It definately attracts the eye now with its 50's inspired glass front. 'Beluga' is open for lunch as well as dinner, but be warned in order to have dinner at 'Beluga' you need to get in early as they stop serving by 9pm. You may be asking yourself why this is the case. Well this is due to the fact that 'Beluga' isn't just a restaurant but a drinking establishment as well. The decor within the establishment is very classy. 50's inspired throughout. Plenty of mirrors and sharps angles make you feel like you should be wearing vintage clothing! You could just imagine a band playing some jazz in a corner. This is where the problem comes in. The decor makes you feel that you should be dining in a upper-class establishment but this is sadly not reality. In layman terms 'Beluga' is basically a pub that serves food! On a whole I found my evening out to be sadly dissapointing. This was not due to the food that was served. For the atmosphere that you got while sitting in a booth with a bunch of people sitting in the booth next to you smoking and being rowdy, the food was surprisingly of high quality. For a starter I had the duck paté served with toasted french bread and onions sautéed in marmalade. Absolutely scrumptious! I couldn't believe that I was being served such a tasty starter in a pub like atmosphere. The meal kept its quality throughout. The main course being tuna in a thai dressing. A lovely blend of flavours. If I had been seating at the back of the place I perhaps would of enjoyed my meal more. A bit of quiet and less smoke would of definately been appreciated! The fact that whilst eating my main course the dj came in and started playi ng loud music helped assist the fact that the atmosphere was a put off. Another aspect that was severely lacking was the quality of the service. The barman who served me had not idea what was on the menu or even the difference between red wine and white wine! As you can imagine this did little to make me enjoy my meal. I feel that if 'Beluga' was to lean more on the dining side of their business they could prove to be quite a hit with diners. I think that 'Beluga' would be a better place to freqent for lunch and not for dinner. If you can put up with the noise and smoke you will be assured of a delightful meal.
