We used to live in the Port East Apartment complex on West India Quay, and so often went to the restaurants below. One we went to quite often until the service just got unbearable was Brown's, the well-known and popular chain.
The food was OK, save for the one time I got food poisoning from the calves liver (for some indication of the severity, I had to go to the hospital and was prescribed Codeine). A few months later, we decided to go back and give it another chance. It was OK, passable - the cocktails were good enough for us to want to come back - but the service was getting progressively worse.
This decline in service reached its head during one trip on Sunday evening. We waited 45 minutes between our starters and our mains, with our dirty plates still on the table when our mains eventually came out. During this 45 minute period, we asked our waitress twice where our food was - obviously, she didn't take the opportunity to take our plates away; less obviously, we heard no apology either then or when our food eventually came out. The fact that I was having the Reuben sandwich and my husband was having a burger - neither particularly time-intensive to construct, one would think - made the delay particularly offensive. It took us another 20 minutes to get the bill, and when we left, it was for the very last time.
We understand when a restaurant is full, it is very difficult to give customers your undivided attention. But leaving dirty plates for 45 minutes? Not apologising for the delay? And then making us wait another 20 minutes to simply pay and leave? The restaurant was full when we left - which is maybe why they've let standards drop as they have. Other restaurants on West India Quay have shut due to the credit crunch, so maybe they're getting arrogant? Whatever it is, I haven't been back since.
