Advantages: quick inexpensive resonable food
Disadvantages: Not your healthiest option
It has been quite a few years since I set foot inside a Burger King. This was not because it had done anything to put me off, but with two young children's healthy diets to think about, I wanted to wait until they experienced the delights of the fast food chain! However, as our kitchen floor is being retiled and as the dust and the mess has virtually put the kitchen off limits, I had to take the girls out to eat somewhere that was quick and not too expensive. This is how we found ourselves in the Wokingham Burger King at 5 pm on a Thursday evening!
The early evening slot seems to be a very good time to go as the restaurant was virtually empty. This meant that it also seemed very clean as the staff had time to keep everything clean before too many customers descended on the place. This also meant that we strode straight up to the counter where we did not have to wait at all before we were served by the very friendly staf. We made our choices and were sitting down to eat within a matter of minutes!
The menu is pretty much as you would expect with a great variety of burgers but there are chicken, fish and vegetarian options too. The best way to select different items is to go for a meal deal. I went for a chicken royale, French fries and an orange juice which cost just over £5. This did not seem bad value although there are cheaper meal deals that you can have. It was actually very tasty. The chicken has a crisp coating and is served in a bun along with iceberg lettuce and mayonnaise. I like the fact that if you go on the Burger King website you can find out the nutritional values that it contains. (I didn't actually realise this until we came home, but if I do take the girls again - and I suspect they will nag me! - then I will look up various items on the menu first. AS it turns out, my Chicken Royale contains 606 calories in total of which a staggering 171 are contained in the mayonnaise! As this was my main meals this did not seem too horrendous although with 15 grams of fat I wouldn't recommend eating this on a regular basis! The accompanying fries did also contain an additional 200 calories though!
I did enjoy the meal with the chicken being tasty and the coating crispy, although the lettuce and mayonnaise did have a tendency to fall out of the soft roll. As I was obviously eating this with my fingers, it did feel slightly messy.
My daughters both ate a kid's meal deal which was Angus mini burgers, fries and a drink of milk. There were various combinations that could be made up, and I did think that the option to drink milk was very good. The total calories contained in the mini burgers and the bun was only 272 calories which I didn't think was too bad. The girls really enjoyed their meals but what they loved best of all was the small toy that came with it! I think that it will be the lure of more toys that will make them want to return to Burger King! The cost of the children's meal deal is £3.19.
There are lots of choices at Burger King although they do all seem variations on a fast food theme! They seem to have made some attempt to provide some healthier options including introducing some salads. However, at the end of the day you have to recognise that this type of eating is not that healthy and it is probably best to restrict visits to just the odd occasion.
I actually found eating at Burger King to be quite a pleasant experience and my two daughters loved this rare treat - they are easily pleased! The restaurant and toilets were clean, the service was quick and the staff were very friendly. The food is pretty reasonably and I do think that Burger King has the edge on some of the other fast food chains. There is bound to be a Burger King near you and will probably offer the options of either eating in or drive- thru and take away. If, like me, you have not visited for a while, it is worth giving them a try for the odd occasion when you want something quick and reasonably priced!
Summary: A good place to eat once in a while
