Advantages: The chips!

Disadvantages: Often very busy

I'm a keen and frequent visitor to Cafe Rouge because it really is the closest thing you will get to a traditional, continental, pavement cafe in the UK....though no bread at the beginning of your meal - why not!?

The Cafe in Cheltenham is well-decorated in the traditional red colours with a generous sprinkling of aretfacts from France - you know the kind of thing, baguettes, onions, photos of Eiffel Tower etc. Staff are friendly and approachable, always smiling and courteous (perhaps the generous supply of foreign workers helps to mantain that friendly atmosphere prevalent in most Cafe Rouges I have been to).

The food is delightful, from the starter of batons and dips to the juicy steak and chips. The chips are simply the best - quite evidently imported from the continenent, because you just dont see frites like this unless you're in Paris. Prices are competitive though not cheap. You simply get what you pay for. A bottle of "vin blanc" is £12 and a typical steak and frites is no more than £10.

Cafe Rouge in Cheltenham even offer French-speaking nights where you can brush up on your oral skills. A wonderful addition to diversify an already good restaurant.

Summary: A great restaurant
