For my first visit to Cafe Roug, my wife said we should go to the Salford Quays outlet. So, with Tesco vouchers in hand, we made our way there last Saturday. We were early enough to not have to book and got a nice central table. The service was quick and sort of friendly. I am prepared to stand corrected on this one, we were both unconvinced that, despite their French accents, the majority of staff are no more French than myself.

The menu is varied although if you are a strict vegetarian, who does not eat fish, you will be stumped apart from one dish. I wouldn't say there was a huge choice but it is ample with four or five options within the main categories of fish, salad and steaks.

We started with drinks that were quite expensive in my opinion - £2.70 for a fresh orange and £5.70 for a medium sized glass of wine. Foodwise, I opted for a rib-eye steak with a peppercorn sauce, but even for £18 this only came with French fries (no better than McDonalds which are not great) and watercress. Any vegetables e,g, carrots, beans etc were extra.

The food was nice but nothing special and when the bill came (after starters, main course and dessert to be fair) it came to £67 which still seemed very high. We had budgeted nowhere near this with our vouchers so ended up paying out the £27 difference.

In conclusion, I believe there are better places out there botf food wise and for value but if you have the money and are happy with "decent" food, this could be for you.

Summary: Take it or leave it
