Very average restaurant (Cafe Rouge)

Advantages: Quite a nice atmosphere Disadvantages: Food isn't great - by french standards it's probably bad I have only been to Cafe Rouge a few times and the reason is because i feel that for the same price elsewhere you can get a much much better meal. I have been to the one in Colchester which is quite small and the one in Chelmsford which is larger with a great outside area although inside and out the tables seem very close to each other - wherever you sit you feel that you may as well strike up a conversation with whoever is on the next table - bearing in mind they can hear everything you say! This is a shame as the deep red outside areas and furniture and decor inside make Cafe Rouge feel like it could be quite intimate. They usually have candles burning especially in the evenings and it could be quite romantic - i just don't rate the food at all. They do make a great coffee though - but i would be more likely to go to starbucks or costa for a coffee as you can take it away. It was a long time ago that i went to the one in Colchester and i had some sort of bread as a starter and as a main i had duck but i remember i wasn't impressed. More recently i have been to the one in Chelmsford and had a caesar salad which was quite nice and the service was quick considering i had mentioned i had to be in and out on my lunch hour. I would generally say that Cafe Rouge is a pretty average restaurant, ok for a lunch with a friend but i certainly wouldn't spend any special occasion here. Summary: Ok for lunch or coffee but not worth wasting a nice dinner here |
