Advantages: The half yard hot dog, the views
Disadvantages: Lack of comfortable seating
Capn Jaspers is a Plymouth eaterie that is famed for its quirkiness. It began in the late 70s, when the Capn opened a small shack to raise money for charity, and it's never gone away.
Situated right on the waterfront in the Barbican, Capn Jaspers is a food venue like no other. There are funny pictures, models and newspaper articles everywhere - it's a really eccentric place. Basically, it's a glorified hut that serves food which you then sit and eat out front: classy it is not, with pretty much the same level of comfort as a burger van.
Although it's become more commercialised since the Capn died in 2001, it's still a great place to buy a tasty bite, like the half yard hot-dog (literally a hot-dog half a yard long). The site has great scenic views over the boats, and is a quirky little place to eat - very popular with the tourists.
If you ever bring a friend to the city, or are not from Plymouth yourself, you should come here for the experience alone. Of course, the food is good too!
Since the Capn died his daughter has taken over, and the original spirit of the place isn't quite there anymore, but the food is as good as any burger van (they do burgers, hot dogs, tea, coffee etc etc) and the atmosphere is definitely better.
It's open from 7.30am to midnight every day, and a lot of the morning traffic is fishermen, the night traffic clubbers - many a Capn Jaspers has been thrown up on the cobbled streets of the Barbican by drunk clubbers I can tell you!
Finally, a couple of items from the menu will give you an idea of prices:
JASPERIZER 3-95
Quarter Pounder Bacon Burger atop a Quarter Pounder Cheese Burger finished with Fried Onions
THE WHITEHOUSE WONDER - 2.95
Quarter Pounder with Mushrooms, Bacon & Tomatoes
CHOICE CHICKEN - 2-80
Quarter Pounder Chicken Burger on a bed of Iceberg Lettuce served with Tomatoes & Curried Coleslaw
HALF A YARD OF HOT DOG - 3-85
Half A Yard (45.7 cms) of French Bread with Two Jumbo Pork Sausages, Iceberg Lettuce & Onions
Summary: Worth a try
