Caviston's Food Emporium is in the village of Glastule, a southern suburb of Dublin situated between Dun Loghaire (where the Holyhead Ferry from Wales docks) and Dalkey. It's a family run business which opened its doors over 50 years ago and over the years has built up its reputation as probably the finest fishmongers in the whole of Dublin. Nowadays it not only sells the finest seafood, but has expanded its retail shop into a superb deli.

Back in the mid-1990's it opened a small seafood restaurant next door to the shop, which is now considered one of the premier fish restaurants in the whole of Ireland.

When I describe the restaurant as small I really mean small, as Cavistons only have seating for 26 diners, with additional space sometimes available at pavement tables when the weather is fine.

If fish is your thing then you can't better this restaurant. The menu is created on a daily basis and is dependant on what catch the Irish fishing fleet have landed that morning, as all their seafood comes directly from the docks and is simply as fresh as you can get.

Up until recently the restaurant only opened for lunch, but in March of this year (2009) they opened the doors for diners on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The menu is wide and varied and will cater for whatever seafood you fancy. All the fish and shellfish are cooked to their own recipes (some of which they publish on their excellent website) and all are designed to titillate and tantalise your taste buds. Put simply this is seafood at its very finest, and the restaurant fully deserves all the many plaudits which has come its way over the years.

The décor is very basic, but don't let this put you off in any way, as the totally scrumptious food more than makes up for any lack of ambience.

As for cost you can expect to pay somewhere in between Euro40 to Euro50 per head for your average meal (excluding wine) and a wee bit more if you order one of their more expensive main dishes like black sole on the bone or lobster.

I have used this restaurant on many occasions and it is one of my families most favoured eating spots in the whole city and comes with my highest possible recommendation.
