Last Friday I had my first night out with the girls since having my baby 4 months ago and after over a year of no drinking whatsoever I decided to have a few cocktails and make the most of my evening out!
Chiquito is a chain of Mexican Restaurants and we visited the one at the festival leisure park in Basildon, Essex.
When we arrived a the restaurant we were 10 minutes early and we were still waiting for a few more people to arrive so we were told we could wait at the bar area and get a drink then just to let the waitress know when we were ready.
Myself and two of my friends wanted to try some cocktails so we had a look at the cocktail menu and decided to get a jug of sex on the beach for £9.95. The jug held enough to fill our 3 glasses nearly to the top and was absolutely delicious! Cocktails were available to purchase for around £4.45 each so the jug worked out to be cheaper between the three of us.
When we were ready we were shown upstairs to our table by a very friendly waiter and were asked if wanted more drinks. After having a good look at the menu we all then ordered our starters and main courses.
Our starters took about half an hour to arrive but only half came out, then another few and the finally me and another girl got ours and we were all done. This was the only bad point to the night but we really didn't mind too much as there were 11 of us and it was a very busy Friday night and also we were sent out plates of tortilla chips and salsa for free while we were waiting.
I had a Bacon, avocado and chicken salad which cost £5.10 and was very large and very tasty. A few of my friends had the nachos to share and they looked absolutely heavenly and went down very well too.
Our main courses came out about 15 minutes after we finished our starters.
For my main course, after lots of deliberating because everything on the menu sounded so nice I decided to go with a citrus marinated pork burrito which was around £11.00. When it was placed in front of me I was impressed! The burrito was huge with guacamole, sour cream and salsa sauces poured over the top and was served with a pot of spiced chick peas and a pot of rice. The chick peas were a bit spicy for me but I polished off my burrito and rice with no problems even though I was really full up towards the end of my meal just couldn't bear to leave any! The best bit was definitely the citrus pork filling, it was really finely shredded and soft with a lovely tangy citrus taste.
On the cocktail front we got through another 2 jugs - a margarita and a daiquiri. Both were very nice and did not last long at all!
I must also add that I thought chiquito was very well decorated and certainly gave a Mexican ambiance with Spanish style music playing in the background, lovely black and white photographs of old fashioned Mexicans up on the walls and various pinatas and Mexican props scattered around the place. Having been to Mexico a few years ago it really made me think to my trip.
I paid just £30 for my meal and drinks as we all purchased a cocktail jug each and then put an extra bit of money in for the service charge. I think this was a great price for such a delicious meal and 3 cocktails and I would not hesitate to go to Chiquitos again.
Summary: A lovely Mexican meal in a lovely Mexican setting
