Coasters Restaurant (Bude)
Advantages: Great food, very well priced, great service
On our trip to Bude Mr Tart and myself were searching for somewhere to eat on the Friday evening. We were saving our 'posh' meal for the Saturday night and just wanted somewhere decent and reasonable for the Friday. We found that Bude does not over-run with restaurants. In fact, in the whole town, we found 3 pubs and an eastern restaurant. The pubs looked and smelt fairly horrible and the eastern restaurant (which looked lovely) couldn't seat us until late. I'm sure Bude has other restaurants but they were certainly hiding well that night! We were despairing when we wandered down a side road and came across Coasters - and it turned out to be the best place we could have gone.
Coasters is at 2 Belle View Avenue. The street is quite small but it is worth asking in order to locate it.
Inside the restaurant looks like a typical place for a cream tea (which it does serve during the day). There is a welsh dresser by the entrance and a fridge with lots of different cakes in. The restaurant only has around eight tables and only two were occupied, which was great for us as it meant they could definitely seat us but I can't understand why it wasn't more full considering what a great find it was. The decor was inoffensive and quite seaside chic. It was a perfect atmosphere to eat in, not a huge crowded place and no loud music getting in the way of conversation.
We were given the menu by our very helpful waitress. You had a choice of two or three courses. The two course menu was £15.95 and the three course was £18.95. These prices appealed to us and after the meal we decided that it really was a bargain.
The restaurant has no license but you can bring your own. Mr Tart toddled off to the off-license while I ordered. They charge a small corkage for wine but we didn't get charged any extra as we just had beers.
To start I had the tiger prawns. There were four prawns cooked in garlic, served with a salad. The salad would have come with a nettle, lemon and ginger dressing but this didn't appeal to me as I'm not really a fan of ginger so mine came without it. The prawns were seriously yummy and you could tell they were very fresh. Mr Tart had the blinis which had a fish topping. He said these were yummy as well, again made with really fresh ingredients.
For the main course I had chicken. It was stuffed with ham and sundried tomatoes and came with a Mediterranean vegetable sauce on the side. Mr Tart had the beef dish, which looked like stew and had prunes in it. We were also brought loads of veg, included roast and new potatoes, carrots and baby sweetcorn. The veg was all perfectly cooked and the roast potatoes were really crispy. We both agreed that the food was delicious.
We were, however, both stuffed. We really wanted to try the desserts but weren't sure that we could manage one! We asked if we could have a pause and eventually decided that we would share a mini pavlova. I'm really glad that we did. The meringue was well cooked and it came with strawberries and kiwis. It was just light enough not to overfill our stomachs again!
The menu was not extensive, there were around four starters, fours mains and four desserts. However, this did not distract from how great the food was and I honestly think that most people would have liked one of the options for each course. There was nothing too experimental or spicy, but there were enough unusual ingredients to make it feel special.
At the end of the meal the chef came out and had a chat with the different tables. I really liked this - it gave the restaurant a really homely feel. The service we had was excellent all night.
You can probably tell that I was hugely impressed by Coasters. I have no idea where we would have ended up without it but I'm very glad we didn't have to find out. Coasters is a hidden gem. The food and service was wonderful and in an area where the selection of restaurants was pretty slim I can highly recommend it.
Summary: Great find
