Da Mimmos (Newcastle Upon Tyne)
Advantages: Decent enough
Disadvantages: Soem odd decor choices
I recently bought a discount voucher for this restaurant. The offer was for a family meal for 2 adults and 2 children with pasta and pizza and unlimited soft drinks. I'm sure this was for about £10, so for a Friday evening meal with Little Miss and grandson, this was going to be a bargain.
Da Mimmo's is situated in the centre of Newcastle City centre, and close Newcastle United football club and The Gate. There are plenty of transport links with Monument Metro station and Haymarket bus and metro stations being within walking distance.
Close to the restaurant there are several small car parks which are free after 6pm and there is also on street parking.
The restaurant is on a side street and easily spotted by its red white and green awnings. There are three large windows with doors in between and its easy to think the place is closed because one of the rooms looked really dark inside. However, a few steps took us past two lit rooms and then the door which led straight into the bar area. This area is a relatively large room with seating along one side and a large bar which seemed well stocked with different drinks.
The main dining area seems to be split into two rooms which are partitioned off by a low wall. One of the rooms was actually closed and this was the darkened room, which is clearly opened when the place is busier. We were quickly seated at one of the tables and a high chair was brought. The tables are covered in white cloths and there are plenty of mirrors and also a rather impressive large sculpture in the alcove close to where we were seated. At the back of the room was a table/desk with an assortment of odds and ends including a large jar of lollies to which grandson's eyes were constantly drawn. I couldn't quite see the point of this table as it was in a darkened area of the room and just seemed to serve no purpose apart from holding lots of odds and ends, rather like the top drawer in my kitchen!
Other than this, the room was nicely set out although some of the tables were very close together and if I am going to be very picky, the large chandelier could have done with having several of the bulbs replaced.
There are several menu options available, which can be down loaded from the website http://www.damimmos.co.uk/ . The menu is similar to that in many other Italian restaurants with pizzas and pastas featuring highly as well as meat and chicken dishes.
With our voucher, we were advised to select one pizza and one pasta dish, so we chose the Margherita pizza and the vegetarian pasta. We didn't quite know what to expect, and when it was served with the additional garlic bread which we ordered as well as the pizza and pasta, we were brought a large pizza and alarge bowl of pasta complete with small plates and a serving spoon. I quite liked this idea as it meant we could pick and choose and select only the quantity of food we wanted on our plates. The pasta was well cooked and served with a glut of vegetables- lots of peppers, onions and sweetcorn, and it was well seasoned and tasty. The pizza had a nice thin crust and was very cheesy which Himself liked but it was a bit too much for me so I concentrated on the pasta.
The dessert menu is written on a board and only Himself wanted a dessert, choosing as ever the chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. This was well presented as a slice of cake and was pronounced as delicious.
With a glass of wine, the extra dessert and garlic bread on top of the voucher I think we spent an extra £12 which made it a very inexpensive evening out for four people.

The staff are helpful and friendly and the restaurant is very family friendly. The food we had was not spectacular but neither was it awful more an average meal in a restaurant. However, give what we spent I didn't expect miracles!
I had a few gripes about the décor of the place but overall it served our purposes and we had a pleasant evening out
Thanks for reading
