Dakota is part of a 'chain' of American restaurants around London. But if chain makes you think of burgers and fries - think again! The food is outstanding, the setting is attractive... of all things, only the service failed to live up to my American dream... Dishes tend to have a range of exciting ingredients, with fresh fruit and vegetables included in unusual salads or salsas with your main dishes. The home-made breads (like apricot onion foccaccia) are terrific, and my companion rated her scallops the best she'd ever had. My starter was a 'pizzette bianca' with mushrooms and fontina cheese - delicious. Main courses include fish, red meat and, sadly, only one vegetarian choice - it was lovely, though, stuffed red pepper with pumpkin and goats cheese. It did strike me that if you are vegetarian and DON'T like goats cheese, then you'd probably only enjoy the bread. We ate a mixed cheese plate for 'dessert' - the menu includes an interesting range of liquers and dessert wines selected to match, a nice touch. Sadly, the service was not great. Our waitress was new, and while we sympathised with her total inability to open a bottle of wine, the other staff were not really keeping enough of an eye on her. The dining room itself was low-key and elegant (very unlikely the equally yummy sister restaurant, Montana, in Fulham. Despite these reservations, I'd still recommend this for a special meal... Dakota is on Ledbury Road, between Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove tube.
