Domino's Pizza has over 8,700 stores in over 60 countries.
Tom Monaghan opened the first Domino's Pizza place in 1960 in the USA. The first store opened in the UK in 1985. This surprised me as I thought they had been around the UK longer than this as people rave so much about the pizza's.
Tom joined forces with his brother and together they opened a pizza delivery store in Michigan. They named it DomiNicks. A year later, Tom traded his Volkswagen Beetle car for his brother's share of the store and later renamed his business Domino's Pizza.
I have to ask are they worth the money? A small basic cheese and tomato pizza costs £8.99 which is 6 slices and I think around the 9-10 inch size. If I order this from a local takeaway I expect to pay around £3.50.
So why is Domino's so special that people will pay more than twice the cost?
My girls love domino's although the first time they tried it was only last year because of the 'two for Tuesday' offer.
Domino's do 4 sizes of pizza - a personal (4 slices which I think is about 6 inch), a small (6 slice) medium (8 slices, I think about a 12 inch) and a large (10 slices 14-16 inch). Apart from the personal size all the pizzas come with a little tub of garlic and herb dip which my girls love especially to dip any crust in. I find the dip ok but it is very garlicy (but it is a garlic dip).
You can create your own pizza by adding extra things on to any pizza that is already on the menu (for a price). They have a mixture of things that can be added and now have a new gourmet range.
------------------------- Some of the Extra toppings -------------------------------
cumberland sausage
ground beef
pepperoni
ham
tuna
pineapple
green peppers
onions
olives
jalapeno (but no chillies which are hotter)
from the gourmet range
baby spinach
blue cheese
I have not named all the extra toppings as if you order from Domino's I am sure you will find out for yourself.
You can also do a half and half pizza.
There are 5 or 6 different crusts that you can have including thin, stuffed and decadence. It explains them all on the website.
I personally think Domino's is overpriced and over rated. I find the sauce on the pizza too sweet which is probably why my girls like it so much and they don't put enough cheese on. Sometimes even when I ask and get charged for extra there is hardly any on. I always choose a classic thin base and this is nice enough, it doesn't taste too salty like some do (I am led to believe it has a lot of salt in though, you can get them details off the website). It is light and floury. The cheese they use is mozzarella which surprises me that it doesn't taste too cheesey and it isn't really stringy.
I also think that when you have a topping (other than the cheese and tomato) that they should put a sprinkling of cheese over the topping as they just seem to be place there on top.
As well as pizza they do sides (not chips) like garlic bread which is the best, as it is nice and cheesey, wedges and chicken stuff (I am not going to list all). They also do a a few desserts ben and jerries being one.
At my local Domino's there is always offers on ie buy one get one free on Tuesdays, and meal deals etc. Even with the deals when we order it can be over £20 for a family of 4 depending what we order. The last order was just over £17 on a Tuesday where one pizza was free (only applies to medium and large). We ordered a large cheese and tomato, a medium with jalopeno's, peppers and blue cheese and a personal one with blue cheese. There was enough for us but my youngest always eats a lot more pizza if ordered from here.
Whenever we have ordered this online it is usually delivered in about 20 minutes and is still hot. I am told by someone that used to deliver that it is because they put something like a hot plate in the bag that they are packed in.
My eldest is having a friend to sleep on Friday and I have promised them a Domino's (and the youngest wants it). I woon't be having it me and my husband may have a thin goodfellows and add our own stuff.
Summary: over priced and over rated
