The best reastaurant in Stoke - albeit without much competition (Fatty Arbuckles American Diners)

Advantages: Straightforward burger-and-chips place, meals well put together and good service.

Disadvantages: Located on a desolate retail park

I took ten people to Arbuckles in Stoke on a busy Saturday night. We were shown straight to our table, our order was taken quickly by a friendly waiter called Steve (curiously he wore a badge identifying him as 'Jo'). Starters arrived within 10 minutes, were nice enough and were what we had ordered; nothing missing or muddled.

When Jo/Steve cleared the starters he gave us an update on the progress of the mains, which sure enough arrived a few minutes later. Again nothing missing or wrong. Experience has taught me that to get anything approaching a rare steak in England, you must

a) border on the theatrical in your explanation to the waiter of how rare it must be.
b) cut the thing through the middle the moment it arrives and before the waiter has time to disappear.
c) almost inevitably send the first one back as it will be medium at best.

I got a rare steak, first time.

Summary: Your best chance of eating in Stoke without poor food, interminable waiting, and surly service.
