      Very helpful

a nice restaurant, but perhaps placed in the wrong area for the prices charged

Fish and Grill is Malcolm John's second restaurant in Croydon (Le Cassoulet was the first). And since opening it has drawn a lot of crowds.

Whenever I walk past at the weekends it always seems to be busy, but I wonder whether they struggle a bit more during the week as they usually have a special lunch time and weekday evening offer on. The usual menu is pretty pricey (especially given that the restaurant is based in Croydon and not entral London) so if you want to sample the food without the price tag it would be worth taking advantage of these special offers.

The food specialities are in the name. So vegetarians, while there are some options - this is not really the place for you!

When we arrived our table wasn't quite ready so we waited at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. The barman was friendly, but a tad on the strange side.

When our table was ready, we were taken over by the maitre'd, who was friendly. The menu choices are plentiful - but again only if you like meat and fish. Plain and simple. Meat and fish. The clue is in the title people.

I opted for burger (being a burger queen and having read another review that said it was incredibly tasty) and my boyfriend had the haddock. We decided not to go for any starters and to save room for the pudding instead.

The burger was indeed incredibly tasty. The meat cooked to perfection, the bun light and fluffy and the salad garnish inside was lovely. The fries on the side is a small portion but the burger was so large that the size of the fries didn't really matter.

The haddock however, although tasty, was not very big. It came with a potato side anyway, but my boyfriend was feeling a bit greedy and ordered an extra side of fries. Just as well he did, because he (unlike me) was still hungry after finishing his main. I'm not a huge fish lover but I tried the haddock and it was very tasty and cooked wonderfully well - it just could have done with being a slightly bigger portion.

The desserts were lovely. We had a bread and butter pudding, and a sticky toffee pudding and shared them. Really lovely end to the meal.

The cost of the meal for the mains, desserts and a bottle of wine was about £70 not including service. Which for Croydon is pretty high.

The waiting staff were fine. They weren't amazing, but they weren't bad either. They were friendly enough, but you had to keep looking around everytime you wanted their attention and we had to wait about 10 mins to get the bill. But as I said, they are not rude or offensive, they just perhaps a little aloof, but some diners prefer that.

The surrounding area of Croydon doesn't really fit in with this restaurant, so perhaps it is better served to just go there for your dinner, and not think about drinks afterwards, unless you want to top off your evening at Tiger Tiger.
