Advantages: The Fish, The Service, The Wine List

Disadvantages: The Price, The Location

I have always been partial to a fillet-o-fish and around three years ago I found Fishers in a quiet corner of Leith next to the Malmaison hotel and brasserie.

It's very small and it's always packed, although they have opened another Fishers in the centre of town.

The menu one could describe as fishy eclectic so if you don't like fish and you don't like foreign muck then don't go here. Personally I adore both so Fisher's is the place.

Services is not classically good but it's extremely friendly and helpful, and if you want something simple or wierd then just ask. I've never been kept waiting for anyhting and I haven't been forgotten and you do get the feeling that they want to know their clientele, as well as take their money. (Lets face it Fisher's is not cheap).

The menu changes constantly and they always have blackboard options which I usually go for. Oysters are always available usually from Loch Fyne, but they also do the big fat other ones, and you can mix up the Loch Fyne with the pacific ones if you like. Last time I was there I had some seafood Pakora which was lightly spiced but very flavoursome.

Main courses are all about fish, with or without heads. My own personal favourite is the Tuna (Take the head and tail off please!) which is lightly seared on the griddle and served with a salsa. But don't quote me on this as the menu changes dramatically from day to day. Monkfish, Cod, Halibut and Hake usually make guest appearances - some plainly grilled others in more elaborate dishes but never knowingly over-cooked or over-elaborate.

Personally I don't do sweets, so I can't comment, but the wine list is superb and there are some good value items on it and the house wine is excellent. Last time they had some fine Cloudy Bay.

Don't look at the bill, it is expensive, but whatever they charge it is worth the money. Just book earl
y.
