Advantages: fantastic fish

Disadvantages: you might need to book in advance

Having heard good reports of Fishers bistro I found myself there on a wet and windy Edinburgh night a few weeks ago. Having seen a play on the Edinburgh Fringe we headed to the nearby Tower restaurant, but were told that they were full. After a few more phone calls, including one to Ducks, I was beginning to wonder if any restaurant in Edinburgh had a spare table on this Sunday night! At last, a friendly voice at Fishers in Thistle Street said they would love to have us and we could have a table in half an hour or so. So we hopped on a passing bus and within minutes were enjoying a warm welcome at Fishers. Our table was not ready, but we were offered seats at the elegant marble topped bar and ordered a glass of house white each while we perused the menu.

Within 10 minutes or so our table was ready and we were ready to order. I chose the crevettes (big prawns) with an avacado salsa as my starter and what a tasty entree they turned out to be. Four fresh, plump and juicy chargrilled prawns on a plate with a delicious circle of salsa which complemented the prawns very well.

On to the main courses - I plumped for the Halibut while my Mom went for the Sea Bream. Both were superb - fantastic fresh fish, perfectly cooked. And I know from my own efforts at home that cooking fish 'just right' is not the most easy thing in the world! My Halibut was served on a bed of sliced parsnips cooked with grain mustard - an unusual but very tasty complement to the fish. A side dish of vegetables were served with our main courses and we also got some home made bread while waiting for our orders - all at no extra cost. Prices were very reasonable for this level of cooking too - around 5 or 6 pounds for starters and 12 pounds or so for a main course. If you are feeling flush yu could always go for the Lobster - a tasty looking choice but a bit beyond our budget!

Nothing on the desert menu particularly grabbed our attention, so having had an ele
gant sufficiency of food we departed into the night having had one of the best meals I have had for a long time. Service too was very friendly and efficient with cheerful staff greeting us, looking after us and saying goodbye when we left. I can't wait to go back!

'elegant sufficiency' - I love it! Gret op - I'm hoping to get to fishers some time next week, and I can't wait. Glad to see veg is included - I hate paying extra for side dishes. Cheers - Karen

You were soooo lucky to get in at short notice. I love this place, too, but you are right about the dessert menu.
