Fiume (Washington, Tyne & Wear)
Advantages: Great special menu
Disadvantages: Accessed via steep stairs
I was recently at a leaving "do" and because the meal was immediately after work and this restaurant was close by, a table for about 20 people was duly booked early evening.
The restaurant, Fiume is situated with The River bar under the restaurant, is close to the river Wear, and has plenty of off road parking .It has been trading for 15 years so should have plenty of experience.
The building itself is quite uninspiring being a modern 2 storey building with a bar on the ground floor- this was already busy early evening mid week but it was just before the Christmas.
The restaurant is accessed via a door which seems to be at the side of the building and then up a flight of quite steep stairs, so not advisable for wheel chair access.
The stairs lead directly to a small bar area with comfy seating as well as bar stools. This was all nicely decorated and the Christmas decorations were especially pleasing.
We were taken through the main body of the restaurant- a large open room with lots of tables and chairs to a small offshoot of the main room. This small room had a large table neatly fitted in the long rectangular room which looked very cosy but turned out to be a bit too cosy; it was tricky to get passed if the toilet was needed and for the people at the far end it looked a tad claustrophobic. It also seemed a bit tricky for the staff to get round the table and I was left wondering why we hadn't been sat in the main restaurant area as it wasn't especially busy.
No matter, the place is all very light and airy with clean modern tables and chairs, and several rather nice prints dotted around the room.
The a la carte menu features the usual Italian inspired dishes but we opted for the special menu, which is great value. This costs £7.50 for a 2 course meal and is served noon until 7pm Sunday to Thursday and noon until 5pm Friday and Saturday. Diners can chose from a starter of Potato skins, minestrone soup, tomato bruschetta or garlic mushrooms. Main course is any regular pizza or pasta or Chicken of the day for a £2 supplement.
Different starters were chosen by our party and for both the starter and the main course they were all brought at the same time, with no one sitting waiting for ages for their meal. I chose the potato skins which were nicely presented with a small tub of garlic mayonnaise and a salad. These were crispy and tasty and not overly greasy which is sometimes the case with potato skins. I then had a delicious crispy marguerite pizza with just the right amount of cheese- I really don't like it when restaurants go overly heavy on the cheese and this was just right. The other dishes were also pronounced tasty and given that it was a big party, it surprised me that there wasn't a grumble from anyone.
Address: 16 Bonemill Lane Washington NE38 8AJ
The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 10 am until 10.30pm.
Several people I work with had already eaten here but not me, and I must admit to being pleasantly surprised. The location isn't especially picturesque although I would imagine that in the summer and sitting outside there will be a nice view of the river.
The restaurant is modern and clean and the staff are helpful and efficient.
The special menu is tremendous value for money and I would recommend this place for an early evening meal to take advantage of this menu. More suited to parties than romantic meals out in my opinion; I certainly had a good evening out.
