Advantages: great filling food
I came about going here when me and some work mates decided we was going to go on a night out in Lincoln city, we chose our hotel located across the car park from Frankie & Benny's on purpose, we wanted to go for a spot of dinner then go out but decided we'd get more for your money going out getting drunk then going there the next day. It was 11.30 / 12pm ish before we arrived there, I had never been there before but the people I was with really raved about the food and the goo quality service they gave so this was completely new to me. Frankie and benny's is a New York Italian restaurant and bar which combines Italian cuisine with popular American dishes the restaurant has your typical American setting as well so you really do get the feel of it.
From the outside 'Frankie and benny's' looks the typical restaurant, large building with central doors and lots of windows with a few exceptions such as a large centred sign, we went in the day time but so I've been told and seen pictures that is turned on and the sign is written in bright Green and Red writing, where this is positioned is near a few other restaurants and hotels, so this would make me want to go there more than the others and you can see it from the hotel windows too. On the inside, it was brightly lit up with lights with fans on them to keep the place nice and cool with refreshing air because it was a very hot day, despite there being a lot of windows, it didn't make it very light from that, if they had more windows that let in more light they could of saved electricity by not having so many lights on. The kind of decor they have reminded me a little of a barn house, the floors, tables, chairs and banister rails was a dark borwn wood, not sure on the type of wood but you could see that it was something study and heavy like oak. Looking around the place there was American memorabilia such as pictures of the presidents and flags, but they didn't over do it so it looked tacky, they got it just the right ratio in my opinion.
The tables were very large and deep, the seats didn't look at all look comfortable but when I sat down with my pounding hangover, it was like heaven. The tables were very spaced out between each other which was great because you don't want to feel cramped whilst your trying to eat or you don't want to be seated close to a really noisy family with lots of children. A long the back on the restaurants was an open kitchen with a serving side, this was completly open so you coul actually see the cheifs cooking the food, all the difference scents of the delicious food blowing across the restaurants with the fans was lovely.
The menu was set out very professional and very easy to read, on the left it started with the starters in the middle was the mains on the right was the deserts and there was an extra fold out for their offers they have on, the menu's was in a deep red hard back casing which to me made it feel a little posher than it was, it was lovely. Now because of the origins of this restaurant the food it quite typical, lots of pasta, pizza and meat dishes, they of course sell a different variety of side orders of bread and salads. To me this was quite expensive, the starters alone ranged from £3 - £6 the mains were all around the £10 mark and the deserts was the same as the starters. we all decided we was having 3 courses too because it all seemed so lovely, I decided to take them up on the offer they had, starter, main and desert for £8.45 on selected meals, you couldn't go wrong with this considering most of the main courses were actually dearer than this anyway!
All together I ordered, a large pint of fresh orange juice with ice, this was most refreshing, for my started I decided to have the soup of the day with dough balls, this was homemade tomatoe and basil soup, this arived in a deep bowl that kind of reminded me of a fondo bowl, it tastes a lot like bolognaise sauce to me, and as I'm not to keen on tomatoe I asked the waitress if I could have some extra bread so I could dip this in instead, for my main I had the typical spaghetti and meatballs, I think that the size of these was almsot American sizes too because this arrives on a very large plate, although it only had 3 meatballs, these was very large and homemade, with little bits of pepper in to give it that extra spice, unfortunately I couldn't eat all this either, for my desert I has chocolate cake and ice cream, I had this warmed up with was gorgeous when having a scoop of cake and ice cream at the same time, the mix of hot and cold tingled in my mouth, again I couldnt finish all the due to the sheer size of the portions.
As we slugishly dragged ourselves through the doors there was a lady already stood there waiting to greet and seat any customers, she was very smart and professionaly dressed with her hair all tied back, fresh friendly faced in an all black uniform with a short white apron around her middle, she seated up and presented us all with menu's, the waitress / waiter that seats you is the same one that takes your orders, who you see if you have any problems and presents you with the bill. When we went, there was only us in there, it was a Thursday dinner time and there was only one waitress at this time, one cook and what I caan only assum was the manager helping out in all areas. Our waitress was very friendly had a chat and laugh with us the full time we was there, she was great at recommending personal favorites of hers and how tasty they are and put that her 'weight issues' was down to all the cake from there she can't stop eating, which was quite a laugh and of course we reassured her she wasn't fat at all, which she wasn't. There was 8 of us altogether and she patiently took all our orders for a good 20 minutes, after she bought each course to us all single handedly she made sure we had everything we needed, if we wanted more drinks and if the food was to the standard it should of been and she bought us any extra's if we wanted it. Our bill ended up creeping up to almost £200 by the time we had finished, we all work in the same night club and love receiveing tips, we all rounded our own purchases up and paying with notes, at the end of that she ended up with a personal tip of over £20 which she was really chufft about.
The restaurant was very clean and the people working made sure each table was clean as soon as the guests left right away ready for the next customers. I used the toilets, it was quite large and had 4 toilets which is great because in a busy place like that ou do need a couple, this had large brightly lit mirrors too which I loved, it also made it look larger than it was, I do recall there being music on throughout the restaurant but I'm not quite sure what it was, it wasn't your typical chart music or radio station I believe it was a CD but it was nothing I had heard of, it wasn't overly loud depite us being the only people in there at the time. Nearer the end of our meal, families started coming in with lots of children, I can only guess that the waitress's take this into account and do seat them away from other people, as more and more people with children came in I noticed they was all sat in one area and people with out them was sat in another area, no one seemed to mind this and I think that that's great because children can get pretty loud.
You can locate this restaurant Runcorn Road, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN6 3QP and the telephone number is 01522 692 807
Summary: one of the best restaurants I've been to
