An okay restaurant part of a chain

George and Dragon - Table table
      The Causeway
      Marlow SL7 2AA

On our way down to Heathrow before our most recent trip abroad we stopped in Marlow for lunch. The reason for this restaurant choice was twofold. Firstly I had some vouchers earned through a scanning site so the meal would be 'free' and secondly Marlow was in the right direction for us on the way to our hotel near Heathrow.

Table table is a chain of restaurants in the Whitbread group which offers pretty standard food at reasonable prices. They will never win any chef or culinary prizes but you can always rely on the quality to be good and whichever restaurant you eat in the food will taste the same. Considering that we were using my vouchers this would would give us a free meal so we were happy to stop there.

"Table Table restaurants aim to bring great value tasty pub food to an ever increasing eating-out public who like well prepared and genuine food served by friendly staff in relaxing surroundings."

      OPENING TIMES: Mon - Fri: 06:30 - 10:30 12:00 - 23:00
      Sat: 07:00 - 11:00 12:00 - 23:00
      Sun: 07:00 - 11:00 12:00 - 22:30

This is a lovely town right on the Thames with an old fashioned High street so it was a nice place to break our journey, have a walk around and enjoy a spot of lunch as well.

We didn't bother booking this restaurant because every time we have been to a table table place it has never been full.

When we arrived in Marlow we soon found the place but then we had to find somewhere for the car. We noticed there were a few parking places just outside but of course they were already taken. We tried several side roads and drove around a bit until we went up the road next to the park as I thought there is bound to be a carpark near a park. Indeed there was a pay and display so we parked and walked back the five minutes to the restaurant.

When we arrived there was no one about and we wandered around a bit until a young lady arrived and when we said we wanted a table for two she escorted us to a very nice table beside a window looking out onto the street.

Table table have a nice way of dividing their restaurants up so that they are not one huge room but a number of areas with only a few tables in each so you never feel overwhelmed by numbers of people around you. It seems to keep it quieter too so that if there is a noisy group they are placed away from others and that means you can still hear the conversation at your own table.

The menus are always left standing in a block on the table so the young lady took our drinks order and then gave us some time to choose our food. She did ask if we had been before and we said yes. If you say no then they explain how the menu works and what is on special offer and how the lunch menu works.

      They have different deals
Thy offer a fixed Lunch or dinner before 5.30 if you want to eat early: with specific main meals for £4.99
From Mon - Fri, you can choose main meals for about £8.99 for 1 course, £11.99 for 2 courses and , £13.99 for 3 courses)

The menu is varied and the combination complicated but when you are there it is easy to navigate. You won't find any fine dining choices on the menu , it is old fashioned pub grub, decent portions and good value.

I have about three different meals I choose when at this chain, I like the chicken Makhani curry, the haddock and leek fishcakes and oven baked cod and I choose between the three when ever we go to one of these restaurants. This time I chose the chicken Makhani and it was just as nice as it always is with a couple of small pieces of naan and rice.

My husband has a different selection of dishes he selects from and one is the battered fish and chips, another is the big burger and finally the Marston's steak and ale pie. On this occasion he chose the fish and chips which comes as quite a large meal again he enjoyed it as always.

We were both brought our meals after about ten minutes showing it was freshly prepared and both dishes were piping hot. They are well presented for pub meals and generous portions.

The young lady returned to ask how we were enjoying our meals and if we wanted any more to drink. When we had finished we decided to use the full value of my two £10 vouchers and have a coffee each as you don't get change from the vouchers. We had a white wine, two main courses and two coffees for £20 and a bit which I think it good value for a full meal not a snack.

This particular restaurant was not a purpose built place as this chain often are. They are often next to Premier Inn hotels out of town centres. This one was in an older original pub 'The George & Dragon' but inside it has been modernised and looks pretty much like their other restaurants. This one in the pub was just near the bridge as you drive into Marlow. The décor was similar to the newer branches with modern paintings, large vases of flowers and grasses and the tables of chunky pine with the menus on the tables.

This restaurant you enter from the street at ground level so access is not a problem. There was plenty of room around the place so wheel chairs could be accommodated. The toilets were also on the same level and accessible as well as being both clean and tidy.

This was a decent enough place for a lunch but not somewhere I would go for a really romantic meal or a special night out. It was okay and did the job for us with our vouchers and gave us a nice meal prior to our night before going away .
