I'd never heard of Glo until the new one opened in Walton on Thames so we thought we'd go along and give it a try. Glo are a glowing chain of restaurants that now have three premises in the London area.
When I was told a Glo has opened I was expecting a neon themed restaurant! Upon arrival I was thankfully wrong and the place was smart, modern and sophistacted with a dark wood theme, large tables and soft lighting. The 'Glo' I discovered after looking at the menu referred to the Global influence of the food.
This reataurant has a smart bar and comfy sofas at the beginning to chill and have drinks before your meal. The cocktails they serve are beautifully presented and equally delicious. Not to leave out the tee-totallers, there are a good choice of non alcoholic fruit cocktails which are delicious too. Forget the food, I could have happily sat there and drunk the evening away!
There were just two of us, when we visited and we were lead to a cosy little table with pretty candles and flowers on the table. I noticed though there were big square tables that would sit 8-10 people around them, all facing inwards, I think it would make a great location for a big get together and have since booked a christmas party there, partly for this reason, partly for the extensive menu on which I'm sure even my fussiest of friends will be able to find something they like!
When I said that the menu was Global, I wasn't joking. There's a big Asian influence with a selection of curries and thai dishes, however there's pasta and pizza, steak and a choice of seafood and noodle dishes. If you have one of those dialemmas where one of you wants pizza and the other wants indian, I'd suggest here as a good compromise!
You would have thought, with trying to cater for so many different tastes that the quality and service may suffer. Not so. Our dishes were delicious and finished to perfection. I had Chicken on lemongrass skewers for starter and it was cooked beautifully, the lemongrass giving the chicken a really zingy flavour whilst keeping it juicy and succulent. For main I had one of their fusion dishes - Asian Pizza. The one I chose was a smoked salmon and prawn pizza with mini corn and teryaki sauce. The base was so thin and gorgeous. I love the traditional simplicity of flavours in Italian pizzas and wasn't sure I was going to like this Asian twist on an Italian classic but it worked. Though with the lashings of teryaki sauce, it made me very thirsty..lucky I had a fruit cocktail to wash it down!!
The service was good, the staff were friendly and helpful but not intusive and happy explain any dishes if you are struggling to choose and provide suggestions of which dishes go well together. They really seemed to know their menu.
Price wise, it's middle of the road. Think higher prices than your Pizza Express but lower than a swanky hotel. Mains come in around £12 but the extras such as drinks, starters and sides put the bill up. Unfortuneately I had no room for dessert so I cannot comment on those!
Also as it was the opening week, we were given some money off vouchers in town. Their food is also available for take away and they were offering 2 take way pizzas for £12 or 2 for 1 on main meals. So if you have a glo opening near you, see if there's some vouchers going begging!
All in all a great new restaurant I'm looking forward to going back.
