This is a review for the "New Golden Chef" chinese take away at 146 Clarendon Park Road in the Queens Road area of Leicester. (It is named "New" and not just "Golden Chef" as dooyoo have it here- the address and details are, however, correct..).
This has been both myself and Mr Norton's preferred chinese takeaway for the last 8 months after trying various other chinese takeaways in the area, this has come out on top for us.
The opening hours are:
Tuesday- Sunday 5:00- 11:00pm
Free home delivery on orders over £15. Orders under £15 there is a £1 delivery charge and the minimum phone order is £8 within a three mile radius.
There is a 10% discount on orders over £15 but this applies to collection orders only.
We have phoned through orders to be collected and just wandered in to lace our orders and we have never had any issues either with the service or the food.
We tried another chinese takeway in the area and I hated the food- the chow mein tasted rubbery and re-heated and the chicken tasted like anything but chicken! This is mainly why we switched to the New Golden Chef. From the very first time we went in to order a chicken chow mein and some barbeque spare ribs, the service was friendly and efficient, our food was freshly cooked there and then (you can just taste this in the food) and the portions are really generous.
Our order turned up in quite large plastic tubs (that can be re-used if you are short on tupperware!) with lids. The food was packed in the boxes to the brim and it was piping hot. I am quite fussy about chinese food as it is all quite new to me so I expect it to taste out of this world every time I have it. I expect it to taste freshly cooked and be piping hot so it is still hot when you get it home! With the New Golden Chef, every single time we have ordered a take away from here, the food has been superb.
Types of Food
Mainly we order: Chicken or pork or beef chow mein with barbeque spare ribs (the ribs are succulent, the meat almost falls off the bone and you will be left with just a pile of bones on your plate if you order this!) or we order something like sweet and sour chicken with egg fried rice. The rice is always superb with just the right amount of egg to give it that distinctive savoury taste. The sweet and sour chicken is just awesome and when you get this, you can see how freshly it is made as you have to stir the battered (succulent and white chicken meat) chicken into the sauce in the tub. This comes with large pineapple chunks, freshly cooked vegetables (carrot, onion etc).
Their menu has 189 items on it in total. To give you an idea of how extensive their menu is the menu is split into: starters, chilli & salt dishes, spare ribs (four dishes), soups (six types), sweet and sour dishes (seven), rice dishes (14) (ie singapore fried rice), chow mein dishes (15), stir fried U-Don, chef's specials, curry dishes, chicken dishes (15), beef dishes (11), King prawn dishes (11), roast duck dishes (9), roast pork dishes (5), satay dishes (6), szechuan dishes, chop suey dishes, egg fung yoo, english dishes, vegeatrian dishes, extra portions, desserts (limited to pineapple fritter or banana fritter), special meal boxes and set meals.
The Set Meals are brilliant value for money- we got the two person set meal which is: £14 for:
Pancake rolls (2), Sweet & Sour Chicken Balls (8) (with a carton of sweet & sour sauce), Beef with mushrooms (lush!), Chicken with bamboo shoots & water chestnuts (succulent white chicken pieces), large egg fried rice and a huge bag of massive prawn crackers.
We have never yet been able to get through all this food and this is supposed to be for two people. We find the amount of food you get, the quality of the food and the variety in a set meal such as this is just awesome.
An example of the great service we have had is, around Christmas time when we placed a modest order of only two dishes which came to £7.60, the guy behind the counter asked us for our name and address and presented us with a 2010 calendar in a presentation box. We thought this was a really nice touch.
Their prices are VERY generous: a lot of the dishes come in a regular or large option too. For example, you can get a regular Spicy Singapore Chow Mein for £3.30 or £3.80 for a large. The portions are large- one large chow mein and a regular spare ribs will do both myself and Mr Norton and ther will be enough left for us both to have another meal out of it either later on or the next day.
Soup is priced from £1.70 to £2. Chow mein dishes from £2 for a plain regular chow mein to £4.50 for a large chef's special chow mein. Chicken dishes are between £3.70 to £4.50. Most of the menu is priced between £3.50 and £4.50. They also have meal boxes where you get both a meat item plus rice for £4 ie: szechuan chicken plus rice for £4. The rice portions are £1.60 for a regular boiled rice to £2.30 for a large egg fried rice so this is really really affordable.
Overall I would recommend this to anyone who is in the area. We have had over 20 orders from this take away and never had one disappointing dish or one unacceptable wait for food. The staff are friendly, the place is clean and there are always current magazines on hand for you to look through when you are waiting. So, really top marks!
