Advantages: Extensive selection of weird and wonderful burger combinations.
Disadvantages: Quite pricy for a fast food restaurant if not got any money off vouchers.
My review will be based on my experience of Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Leeds.
I had never tried GBK before but was always intrigued by it, and heard many good tales, so when I knew my sister would be arriving in Leeds with an empty tummy on Saturday night I thought we should give Gourmet Burger a try.
I often notice that studentbeans.com (great website for students, check it out, lots of money off vouchers) regularly feature offers for GBK, so before I left to go and pick my sister up, I had a quick look, but the only offer available wasn't valid on a Saturday! Although if you can get onto studentbeans, or register for the offers on the GBK website, they currently have a promotion on for 2 burgers for £10 + free corn chips with salsa, avocado and sour cream, which is valid Sun-Thurs until 25th April.
Anyway back to my visit...
When we arrived at the restaurant it was fairly busy, quite a few large groups of people too, which is always a good sign if you want to share a good experience with lots of your friends at once! We were shown to a table and our drinks order was taken (we went for a bottle of rose wine, my sister's choice, so I can't comment on the taste of it as I am not usually a rose drinker). The wine was £15.75 which may seem quite a lot to spend on drinks in a 'fast food' restaurant, but it was Saturday night after all!
The waitress then left us with the menus and told us our table number before advising us to order and pay at the counter when we were ready. The list of various burgers was extensive, with all sorts of weird and wonderful ingredients to chose from. I went for the Greek Burger which was lamb, and my sister opted for chicken with added bacon. The burgers come as they are so we opted for a portion of chunky fries between us (£2.95) , and a smokey chilli mayo dip-again there was a long list of choices (£1.55).
When I ordered at the counter the staff were very friendly and the process was quick, without any pushy side order sales, which I often find in chain restaurants. After I had paid I noticed a sign about NUS, so I asked if I could have had student discount. The man said they don't offer a discount but have a student card, which he gave to me. The card entitles the student bearer to buy one get one free on eat in or take out burgers Mon-Thurs. On this occasion our bill was £36 (all burgers are between £6-£9)
We were also given a 'return ticket' which was a voucher for our next visit (Buy one get 2nd one for £2)
The food took about the right amount of time to come, slow enough to keep us satisfied that it was prepared fresh, yet quick enough to reach us before starvation kicked in!
WOW! When the burgers arrived they were massive! They had skewers in them to keep them together between a crispy, slightly toasted seeded bun. We were on a table for 2 which became quite a squeeze with the wine, 2 burger plates and then the bowl of chips which was served on a plate too, they probably could have ditched the plate underneath the bowl of chips.
The burgers were very messy to eat so we decided to use our cutlery, like most of the other customers. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and everything tasted lovely and fresh.
The greek burger that I had contained a massive lamb burger with salad, houmous, raita and chilli sauce, it was a bit strange that they used sweet chilli dipping sauce rather than a kebab sort of chilli sauce, but I didn't mind too much.
The chips were chunky and crispy but you didn't actually get that many, they say they are great for sharing but I think if you are really hungry then you could have a portion each, that is if you fancy spending almost £3 on chips. The smokey chilli mayo was tasty, tasting similar to chicken tikka sandwich filler.
I really enjoyed our meal but would prefer to go during the week next time as there are so many voucher codes and obviously the student card, it seems silly to pay full price...
...Today is Monday and when I took my sister to the station to go home, we wanted some lunch first...and ended up at GBK again, this time taking advantage of the student card which I was given on Saturday (the diet can start tomorrow!)!
Today we had the mexican burger, a cheese burger and 2 Cokes for £11 (my sister was disappointed that they don't sell Fanta, or any other fizzy orange, which is a bit strange). I enjoyed the mexican burger although the salsa wasn't at all spicy, it was cool and complimented the avocado and sour cream but I was expecting a bit of a kick in a mexican burger.
Summary: Great fuss free place to eat-especially if you look out for vouchers!
