Gourmet Burger Kitchen in General
Advantages: decent quality
Disadvantages: stingy portion sizes of chips
I was in town (Richmond Upon Thames) with a couple of friends last week and we decided to get something to eat for lunch - we didn't want to go to Tesco because although it's cheap, you can't eat in there and it was raining outside. Most of the other food places in town are expensive restaurants so the main choices were: Pizza Express, McDonalds and the Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Due to the fact that we'd all had pizza recently and none of us are big fans of McDonalds, we went with the latter option.
The Gourmet Burger Kitchem (GBK) is what I would describe as the burger equivalent of a pizza express and this review is based off my experience of visiting the Richmond branch last week (my one and only visit there so far).
The layout and decor of the building was clean and cheerful - family friendly and with decent furniture. Tables were well spaced so you didn't have to squeeze between other diners to find a seat (always a plus).
We were seated quickly, near the back of the restaurant by some large windows and we didn't notice initially, but all around the bottom of the windows were swarms of little mosquitos, on closer inspection they were also all over the ceiling in the rear half of the restaurant! I did notice one member of staff trying to get rid of some of them and I'm inclined to think this was a recent and unfortunate manifestation rather than a lack of cleaning on their part.
The waitress who seated us stated that they'd recently implemented table service (according to one of my friend who had been before, you previously had to go up to the bar to place any orders) and we only had to wait a couple of minutes before they took a drinks order from us and they promptly came back with our drinks then took our food order.
They have a good selection of different burgers available in two different sizes (we all went for the more expensive option) and if you see a burger you like the look of but aren't keen on one of the ingredients, then you can ask for it to be left out - my friend Kieron ordered a chicken burger minus the mayonnaise.
Each of us enjoyed our burgers although I have a few points to make about the meal 1) the 'large' chips is not what I would describe as a large portion by any stretch of the imagination 2) although we all went for the larger burgers, they again weren't huge (big enough, but I don't think a smaller burger would make an adequately sized meal) 3) I had the buffalo burger which is the most expensive on the menu at almost £10 - very nice tasting, but as it tasted just like beef I'd be inclined to go for the cheaper beef burger in the future 4) You're given the option of having your red meat burgers well done or medium.
Overall I had a decent experience at GBK and would be happy to go back again. I imagine that most of their other restaurants are organised in a similar way to the one that I visited and being a chain, the menu will be the same. If you like burgers but don't want to go to McDonalds or Burger King then GBK is a better quality alternative.
Summary: A nice restaurant if you like burgers!
