I hadn't really heard of GBK before my first visit. I had travelled to see a friend in Manchester who had been a few times before, so a few of us decided to check it out. The company originated in New Zealand, and claims to have, ' the best burgers in town.'
On walking in I noticed that the place has an American diner feel about it, mainly due to the seating which consisted of booths as well as smaller tables, in addition to this the ketchup bottles were tomato shaped. It was about 7.30pm when we arrived and the restaurant was fairly busy, nevertheless we were seated straight away in a very comfortable booth and given the menu.
A very friendly waiter came to our table a few minutes later to take our drink order and informed us that we were to order our food at the counter. The menu offers a range of soft drinks including various juices and milkshakes as well as alcoholic drinks. I decided to go for a chocolate milkshake, it cost £3.75 which was definitely a fair price. The milkshake came in a very large metal cup, along with a smaller glass to drink from. I managed to fill the glass at least two and a bit times, the milkshake itself was delicious.
The food menu listed a range of different burgers including beef, chicken, lamb, buffalo and the ever popular wild boar all available with various toppings and extras. There were also several vegetarian options, which very much impressed the vegetarian in our group. You can also build your own burger.
I decided to plough ahead and go for the avocado bacon burger. The burgers themselves don't come with chips, so I got them separately. We made our way to the counter to order our food but did have to queue for about 5 minutes to be served. The lady at the counter did apologise sincerely for the wait and took our orders quickly. The burger and chips combined came to £11.25.
Our food came about 15 minutes later, I thought this pretty impressive considering how busy the place was. I sat in awe of the burger for a few seconds, it was huge and had a cocktail skewer through the middle to keep everything together. After trying to work out how I was going to bite into it, I took a quick photo on my phone and got stuck in.
The beef burger itself was topped with slices of crispy bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce, onion and mayonnaise. All inside a toasted sesame seed bun. In terms of taste, the burger was amazing. You could tell the ingredients were freshly cooked and that the burger was 100% Aberdeen Angus beef as promised on the menu. Because of the size of the burgers they are slightly messy to eat. We were given cutlery in order to cut the burger into more manageable chunks but I decided not to. The chips also didn't disappoint. They were chunky in cut and cooked to perfection, my only issue was that I wanted more of them.
The atmosphere in the restaurant is very relaxed and friendly. In terms of price, GBK is more expensive then the likes of Burger King and McDonalds, but on taste and quality there is more competition. Whilst some of the restaurants do offer a take away service, I wouldn't look at GBK as a fast food establishment, it has much more of a restaurant/diner feel to it.
I have been to GBK several times since my first visit and have been completely satisfied every time. I also found out that there are vouchers all over the internet offering money off deals for the burgers, which makes going to GBK even more worthwhile.
Summary: A Brilliant Dining Experience
