~All about Greggs~
Greggs the bakers was founded as a family business on Tynside in the 1930's and has now been baking for over 70 years. Today, Greggs has nearly 1,600 bakeries and plan to open up over 600 more over the next few years.
All of Greggs products are baked in small amounts daily on the premises to ensure maximum freshness and their bakers understand that precision, timing and experience are extremely important to produce the highest quality baked goods.
~ What do they sell? ~
Greggs sell a huge array of baked goods, both savoury and sweet. Starting in the morning with their breakfast rolls, French pastries and porridge right the way through 'till lunch and tea time with their pastries, pasties, bakes, pizza slices, sandwiches, pastas, salads, soups and platters! To pair with these savoury delights Greggs also offers freshly ground coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks such as crisps and popcorn. But if you're looking for something to hit your sweet tooth, Greggs is your dream come true with their cakes, buns, muffins, doughnuts, biscuits and seasonal treats!
I have visited several Greggs over the years as they are everywhere and I always know that there will be something I like if I'm feeling peckish. Some of the bakeries have seating areas so you can eat in the bakery and some are just takeaway which is what I usually opt for anyway as the tables aren't usually clean as the staff are busy serving customers so it's up to you to put your rubbish in the bin before you leave.
The baked goods are kept in heated glass cabinets on trays so you can see what's on offer, behind these cabinets is the kitchen where you can see the ovens where the freshly baked goods are being made and cooked.
I have had mixed experiences with Greggs customer service. I have often found the people serving to be quite rude and not very friendly, especially during busier times which I guess is to be expected because they are rushed off their feet however a smile wouldn't go a miss!
I have tried more or less every product greggs has to offer at some point, all with tremendous taste! However this is often ruined for me by the product either being cold when it should be hot or it being stale or dry because it's been sat there for a while - especially with the savoury products. According to Greggs everything is supposed to fresh, however this isn't so, if you don't get there at the right time when they are putting fresh food out you will most likely get the left overs which often look very unappetising and 'grey'. Yes you can ask them to re-heat the product and will usually get grunted at and they pop it in the microwave for you, however if the products already dry then putting it in the microwave will only make it drier and tougher! However, the flavour of greggs food is always fantastic, you always that home baked feeling when you dive into your lunch and you can always taste every element of what's supposed to be there, for example in the bacon and cheese pastry wrap (my favourite savoury item!) you get a good substantial amount of all the different components not just a slither of burnt bacon and a sprinkling of cheese, and this is the same with every product - all of the slices are always packed with plenty of tender meat and the sandwiches have a good amount of filling!
Going on the sweet goods, I don't really have any complaints about these at all. They always taste as good as they look and live up their expectations. I have always found their cakes and buns to be moist and their biscuits and cookies to have that home baked crispy edge with a nice chewy centre. Again, as with the savoury bakes, Greggs don't skimp on flavour with their sweet goods, every single one has that special element that packs a flavour punch, whether it be fruit, flavoured icing, jam or cream!
One thing that grabs me with Greggs is that they have such a large variety of foods that no one is excluded, even the health conscious! With their nutritional information on show and special low fat/calorie bakes such as their skinny muffins or low fat sandwiches you don't have to feel guilty when you're out and about and need a quick snack to keep you going!
~Over all opinion ~
I never get bored of Greggs. They are constantly bringing out new bakes to delight the taste buds and I'm always one of the first to be in there to try them! The only thing that lets them down is their staff and the way they keep and serve their savoury food - cold and stale! I would certainly recommend Greggs for when you're out and about as there's always sure to be one nearby and there will always be something you fancy!
Summary: Family Baker's who pack a flavour punch in every bite!
