Advantages: cheap and cheerful
Disadvantages: not vegetarian friendly
I am a semi-strict vegetarian. By this I mean that I do not eat meat but I do eat eggs and dairy products. Anyway, to go on to what I really wanted to write about. There is a Gregg the Bakers near to where I work. As their sandwiches are large and not expensive this Greggs became my regular lunch place. Most mornings I would pull up just before going to work to buy either an egg mayo or a cheese salad and pickle baguette. Whilst waiting for the waitress to put whatever I had ordered into a bag I casually watch whoever else is working at the time. It would strike me as kind of careless that the staff would make egg mayo and tuna sandwiches on the same counter. But I never really thought too much about it. However, one day as I bit into my much awaited cheese and pickle baguette one lunch time whilst sitting at my desk a large crumb fell onto it. (I am a bit of a messy eater and my desk always ends up very crumby) The large crumb turned out to be a piece of chicken. I then recalled all the times that I carelessly watched the staff make sandwiches on the same counter without wiping it down between each different filling. Of course there would be chicken in my sandwich, of course there has possibly been pastrami and tuna and prawns etc. It makes me wonder about other food hygene standards have they let slip. Needless to say I do not buy my sandwiches from there any more.

ahoy - 22/05/01 Did you mention this to them? I am somewhat disappointed as I was brought up on Greggs Cheese'n'onion pasty as a young ahoylet.... |
