Advantages: Great fun atmosphere well looked after by Giuseppe and his staff. Good food. Close to London Bridge.
Disadvantages: Quite steep steps to get into the restaurant.
We visited on a Friday evening at about 8:30 PM. Getting down into the restaurant would be a severe challenge for anyone with a disability so it is out of the question for say someone in a wheelchair. We wanted a table for six and was told it would be a 15 minute wait. So we stood at the bar where we were served by Giuseppe himself a dead ringer for Marlon Brando. Giuseppe is a charming and very pleasant man who poured our drinks for us and topped them up. The waiters and waitresses were flying about at a rate of knots. This is not a restaurant for an intimate meal. Part of the attraction of the restaurant was that it had an Italian flavour with a Frank Sinatra impersonator.
The atmosphere was very jovial, noisy and the pace was absolutely phrenetic we eventually got to sit down an hour after we had got in. Having finally been sat down and offered the menus it took another half an hour before the waitress took our order after trying to catch the eye of the very busy staff running around laden down with bowls and plates of food. The Sinatra singer was crooning his way around the restaurant and creating his own atmosphere. Probably one of the most unlikely impersonators I have ever heard but there was a very happy and friendly atmosphere in the restaurant. Towards the end of the evening the atmosphere got even jollier with many diners joining in with the singing some even getting up and singing and dancing with the entertainer. Some songs were sung in Italian with a Karaoke type machine played through a computer screen above the bar which Mr Faux Sinatra kept returning to to read the words.
A fairly extensive menu which obviously was based around Italian cuisine. We did not bother with starters three of us chose Lobster and crab Ravioli served in a creamy tomato sauce whilst one chose Spaghetti Pescatore described as fresh seafood, slightly spicy white wine and tomato sauce and the other two chose Spaghetti pomodoro and Fisilli Primavera. We were served with some really tasty bread and a small dipping dish of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. After being plied with more drinks our food was served approximately half an hour later.
The food was served piping hot which was good my Ravioli lobster tasted nice and fresh with an overwhelming taste of crab and a nice creamy sauce. It was tarted up with an over generous sprinkling of parsley which detracted the taste of the crab. There were also quite a few tiny prawns in the sauce. We were also served a bowl of green salad consisting of avocado, lettuce and onions and another mixed salad including tomatoes, onions and lettuce. There was also a plate of crispy thin sliced toasted bread.
There is also quite an extensive wine menu too which is quite good with some nice tasty wines on offer.
We were offered the dessert menu which all of us declined. The bill for the food and drinks came to £143.70 for the six of us which I thought was really good bearing in mind we had over an hours wait at the bar plied with drinks and entertainment was provided which added to the atmosphere.
Overall I thought the food was pretty good although to be honest I am not the world's greatest fan of Italian food finding pasta incredibly tasteless and bland. The rest of the group also enjoyed their food too. The waitress then brought six shot glasses full of Sambuca and fortunately three of the group declined to drink it as they were not keen on the taste of aniseed which meant that three of us had to down the Sambuca after the meal. It would have been quite rude not to have drunk what was offered to us as a free drink. It was fairly strong and quite warming on the way down. Giuseppe is trying to create a feeling of a family run Italian restaurant from the mother land and to be honest I think he has a little gem of a place there. I liked the food, I liked the atmosphere I liked the dire entertainer although I would not have paid anything to see him and despite the long wait for a table he made sure that we were well looked after drink wise. Well done Giuseppe!!
After 11PM the venue then changes into a disco which carries on till 4AM.
I would recommend this restaurant for a fun night out as it was quite an experience full of fun and quite loud but very entertaining.
