That cow did not deserve to be so disrespected.

Such a big disappointment. I don't often write restaurant reviews on Dooyoo, but I have to warn people off Hamburger Union at Tottenham Court Road. We showed up around 20h30 on a busy Friday night, but there was just one member of staff on the tills. Her service was perfunctory. Drinks came from the kitchen (slowly) and were phenomenally overpriced for soda poured from cans and cranberry juice from an Ocean Spray carton. I ordered a large Monterrey Jack burger and my friend had a chicken burger. My burger was just horrible. Poor quality texture and overcooked (can't a gourmet burger bar ask how you want your meat?). The cheese and burger bun were below par and the experience was just not enjoyable. The chunky chips were not good and the dip was acidic and artificial. The décor is odd... it suggests upscale diner but the plastic plates are weird. If not going for disposable paper and card wrappers, why not just have more durable and attractive crockery? It sums up a major problem with Hamburger Union: it hasn't got a clue whether it's a restaurant or a fast food outlet. The food was below the standard I'd expect of a fast food place and at restaurant prices.

Hamburger Union where the service is fast and the burgers are healthier

Whilst on a short break in London recently my family and I were looking for somewhere to eat in the West end and came across HAMBURGER UNION in Garrick Street, Covent Garden. None of us are great fans of burger "joints" but decided that we would give it a try, as from the outside it looked modern and clean and although busy not bursting at the seams as some place are up there. Also it was great to go somewhere "non smoking". On entering it reminded us of restaurants in America, you order everything (food and drinks) at the counter, pay and then proceed into the main eating area and place your order number on the table for the server to see. The seating area was clean and the seating was mainly stool type and tables were of varying sizes so if you were on a long table you could end up with other people. It was bright and spacious and you could look out at the world passing by whilst resting your feet and enjoying your meal. We didn't wait long at all for the food and the server came back after a while to make sure that everthing was ok. This restaurant is in an excellent position for all the West End Theatres and you can be sure that if you want to fit a decent meal in before a show that it will be served promptly, which is more than can be said for some of the places around there. For dieters you can choose to have the burger "protein Style" between lettuce. Also for those that are really hungry you can order your burger as a double by adding £3 for the meat or £2.50 for the vegetarian one. I chose the union burger and asked not to have the onion and mayo and it came exactly as I had ordered and it really was very nice and tasty. My husband had the Monterey Jack Cheesburger and the girls had the Barn reared chicken sandwich which looked very nice. We all enjoyed our meal very much. The company state that all the burgers are made on the premises from naturally reared , grass fed or free range meats and then chargrilled. You can either eat "in" or "take away". The chips are fresh not frozen and very chunky and tasty too. We found that two portions between the four of us sufficient. The company also have a policy of not using hydrogenated vegetable oil. Not no reason to not not go, no?

The first time I went to Hamburger Union was with two girlfriends, and another male friend, after we had seen a glowing review of it in Dooyoo. Since then I have been back once, introducing odd people to it, and this review is based on the last time I went there, which was today (!), with a male "work" friend, and two girlfriends. Hamburger Union is a restaurant with a fast-food side. The place is layed out over two rooms; the first one being where you order and the second one being where you eat. As you walk in you are faced with a fast-food style counter with a menu written above it. You order your food and pay here (though we sat down first!), just as you would in any fast-food restaurant, and then are given a card with a number on. Hamburger Union is, obviously, a burger bar, so the menu generally revolves around this. However, there are a couple of vegetarian options available too. My male "work" friend had a sausage sandwhich!!!!! I have just looked on the website (www.hamburgerunion.com) and they have a copy of the menu on there: The Union Burger with ketchup, mayo, red onion and lettuce Cheeseburger with ketchup, mayo, red onion and lettuce Monterey Jack Cheeseburger with ketchup, mayo, red onion and lettuce Bacon Cheeseburger with smoked streaky bacon, ketchup, mayo, red onion and lettuce Monterey Jack & Bacon Cheeseburger with smoked streaky bacon, ketchup, mayo, red onion and lettuce Chorizo Sausage with olive oil, piquillo pepper and rocket Barn reared Chicken Sandwich rosemary, lemon and thyme marinade, tomato, lettuce and mayo Fillet Steak grilled to order with English or French mustard or horseradish, tomato and lettuce Vegetarian Citrus Marinated Halloumi chargrilled with red onion, piquillo pepper, beetroot and rocket Field Mushrooms chargrilled field mushrooms, garlic butter, tomato, red onion and lettuce Vegetable Sausage Pattie chargrilled with ketchup, mayo, lettuce, and red onion The menu, I think, borders just on the unusual side of basic, which for a hamburger restaurant is perfect. The prices are also very reasonable, with a meal and a drink usually costing just under or around £10, though mine was £12.45. One of the girlfriend's cost an unbelievable £12.65. This time I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, chips, garlic mayo and a banana malt. My friend ordered a chicken sandwich, chips, and a chocolate milkshake. (In regards to alcoholic drinks; there are a number of wines on the menu and a couple of beers, and bailey's milkshake ;-p) We were given our numbered card, and then we walked into the room next door. This is where you sit to eat. You can sit where you want; there are about 8 tables for 2 down one side of the room, a large table which could probably fit about 16 people in the middle, and a couple tables for 4 with about 4 tables for 2 down the other side. While we were there there were a large group of girls sitting in the middle on the large table (and another large group of men on the other), so we chose one of the small tables at the side. I popped down to the toilet (which are a bit on the small side but fine nonetheless - though the men's smelt a bit of caca), and then a few minutes later our drinks were brought to us. The milk is freshly squeezed, and tastes amazing. Really really good. My friend's milkshake was also very tasty. The food arrived shortly after your drinks; it couldn't have been more than 9.5 minutes since we first sat down. I had already drank half my milkshake, but this was because I was chomping it down!!! When my seven-stomached friend was presented with his food she said "is that all the chips?" However, the food is so filling that you really have to struggle to finish everything. The chips are proper chips cut from potatoes and not frozen, so they taste really fresh. The burgers are thick and tasty, the lettuce is plentiful and green, and the baps are really soft. I really can't fault the food, everything tastes delicious. By the time we were halfway through our meal we had run out of drinks, and although there is a drinks bar at the end of the room, there are also cups and jugs of water you can help yourself to. We just about managed to eat all our food, leaving only a few chips. The great thing about Hamburger Union is that as you have already paid, you don't get waiters buzzing around you after you've finished waving a bill in your face. Yeah!!! Overall, I would definitely recommend Hamburger Union. I personally love the food there, and think it is excellent value for money. Go with a big appetite, and you won't be disappointed! Hamburger Union is now open in a few locations, though the only one I have visited is the one in London, on Garrick Street, near Covent Garden and The Strand, and the near Covent Garden (stringfellows way).
