Advantages: Nice cheap food

Disadvantages: Not best quality

I absolutely loved Harvester as a child and used to get very excited when it was my Dads birthday and we would end up going. I still absolutely love the novelty of the salad cart. My friend and I decided to go and visit a Harvester Sunday as I was visiting her in Bournemouth for the day and it was a cheap option with the earlybird menu.

Anyway we arrived at the Harvester which was easy to see as they have large signs outside telling you what it is. There were a few parking spaces so I found one easily. We went inside and had to wait a couple of minutes for someone to come over and offer us a table. These appeared to be a wait for some groups but as there were only two of us we were able to go straight in. Only problem was the table wasn't completely set but they did it shortly afterwards.

Once sat down we were given our menus, which are a lot simpler than the menus used to be. This may have been because it was a special early bird menu which only had the cheaper meals on it. The waiter also took our order for drinks and these were brought over fairly quickly. The menu was separated into starters, which there were a few choices for including soup and garlic mushrooms. These were all only a couple of pounds so quite cheap if you wanted one. We didn't choose one of these this day though. The mains were split into two sections. One for 4.99 prices meals and one for 5.99 priced meals. There was still quite a good choice ranging from pasta to burgers. It also allows you to have a choice of chips or potato's with many of the mains.

Once we had given our order we were allowed to go up to the salad cart. This is always my favourite part of Harvester. I find a starter is not really needed when you can have this. Basically there is a cart in the restaurant which has different salad choices which you can help yourself to. This includes lettuce, carrot, sweet corn, potato salad and pasta salad. There is also a range of salad dressings and some croutons and crispy bacon bits to put on top. On top of the cart is a choice of bread rolls and butter or margarine. I find the salad is usually fresh and tastes nice. It is also nice to have something a bit lighter for a change. I usually find the have brought my main when I am half way through the salad so I just eat it with my main too.

The main courses were brought out very quickly. I had pasta with chicken and garlic bread and my friend had a chicken burger. My friend had requested chips and not potatoes which it came with but the waitress was quick to amend this. My meal was very nice although the pasta does not taste the quality it may do in more expensive restaurants but you do get what you pay for. The garlic bread was also a little greasy but was still tasty. I found the portion sizes to be good, not too large but very filling.

We also had a voucher for a free ice cream sundae for up to 4 people so we had this for our desert. There were a few other choices which were a reasonable price too. The sundaes came with a choice of sauce and a wafer and were very nice. They were a medium size which was good as I can't always eat a large one.

When we asked for our bill this came quickly. Only problem we had with paying was that my friend had to go over to the counter to pay as machine wasn't working but this wasn't a problem.

Overall I found the service to be good and the staff were helpful. The prices were good especially with the free sundaes! The food was of a moderate quality but was good for the price. It was a nice and easy place for a lunch.

Summary: A nice place for a quick and easy meal

I used to love Harvester as a child! The salad cart was the highlight of many a trip ... I'm not sure I want to ruin my good memories now though, having seen some of those expose-programmes on the BBC. Excellent review! :-)

Love Harvester, however we have had some rather bad experiences in our local lately! So gone off it a bit,
Great review!

Am I spotting a trend here with your song title headlines?
