      A great restaurant

We visited one of our favourite restaurants here in Llandudno this week for a meal to celebrate hubby's birthday. I realised that I had never written a review about the place so I got the 'product' category added to the database and here is the review.

The restaurant in question is a place called Home Cookin' which is located at 139A Mostyn Street, Llandudno. This is the street running parallel to the promenade and the restaurant is up towards the base of The Great Orme. The phone number for reservations is 01492 876585. The web site can be found at www.homecookin-llandudno.co.uk . If it is high season it is worth booking to make sure that you get a table.

The restaurant was established in 1979 by the Blanchard family and is still a family run establishment now run by the son of the original couple that first opened it. There is seating for about 40 or so people at tables of various sizes with further seating outside.

It is open from 10am until 9.30pm serving snacks, light bites, afternoon teas and full meals. They have an extensive wine list together with a well-stocked bar so that you can have a drink with your meal.

A look at the website will give you an idea of the sort of food that is available and it includes jacket potatoes, omelettes, starters, salads, roast dinners, traditional meals, steaks and vegetarian options.

Now I have given you a bit of a feel for the place I will tell you about my experiences there.

As soon as you walk through the door you can see that the place is classy, smart and spotlessly clean and there is always a lovely atmosphere there. Well behaved children are welcome and well catered for.

A waitress will come to you and show you to a table or tell you how long you may have to wait if there are none available. The members of staff are all excellent - they are efficient, friendly and attentive without being pushy.

Once seated you are given a menu and a list of the day's specials and given ample time to make your choice. The last time that we visited we chose not to have a starter and ordered a mushroom omelette for me and a steak pie for Dave. We also ordered a J2O each and these came straight away.

The meals came within an acceptable length of time even though the place was packed to the gills. My omelette came with fries and salad. It was piping hot and tasted wonderful - lovely and fluffy - and the fries were very nice too. Dave said that his steak pie was exceptional and he too enjoyed his fries and vegetables.

As we were eating the waitress come over just to check that everything was OK with our meals which of course it was. When we had both finished the plates were collected and we were asked if we would like to see the sweets menu - we said yes! There was a choice of about seven sweets - crème Brulee, cheesecake, ice cream, bread and butter pudding, Belgian waffle, hot chocolate fudge cake and apricot crumble. I chose the waffle and Dave chose the fudge cake - mine came with vanilla ice cream and his came with fresh cream. Both sweets were absolutely gorgeous and again the waitress stopped to check if they were OK as we began to eat them.

We didn't have coffee after our meal, although it was available, as we don't tend to bother. The bill is brought to the table together with a mint for each diner. Just to give you an idea of the costs involved our main meals were about £8 each and the sweets were about £4 each so not extortionate.

We took the bill to the counter top pay and, again we were asked whether everything had been OK with our meal to which was answered yes - of course!

The only thing that might be a problem for some people is the fact that the toilets are to be found at the bottom of a flight of steep stairs.

For us the whole experience is one of being made to feel special without being fussed over too much. The food is excellent - we have dined there a few times now and cannot fault anything that we have eaten. The atmosphere is just right for me. It is classy but not so 'posh' that I feel uncomfortable.

In conclusion I would recommend this place to anyone whether alone, in a couple with a family or a group of friends. You will made to feel just as welcome whether you have a just a bowl of soup or a three course meal.

They also do outside catering with a finger buffet, a carved buffet or an afternoon tea. I haven't had the opportunity to try any of these but I have no reason to suppose that they would be anything less than extra special.

So when you are next here in Llandudno and fancy a really nice meal at a reasonable price you could do a lot worse than a visit to Home Cookin'.
