Advantages: extremely good value for money, something different!

Disadvantages: small so book for dinner.

No the title doesn't contain a spelling mistake - it refers to the type of food served in this wonderful little gem of a restaurant, café and snack bar. Aberdeen is not the place you would expect to find a Hungarian restaurant but that is exactly what we have.

Tucked down a little dead end street off Union Street (our main shopping street) is the Adelphi. This tiny little street has an eclectic mixture of shops and even a nightclub but the jewel in the crown is this place. It doesn't look much from the outside but you can't miss its eye-catching red, white and green signs. Inside the décor is reminiscent of Victorian with a gorgeous painted ceiling and lovely fireplace with an open fire. Seating is limited so I would strongly recommend booking for dinner!

The menu is very expansive in terms type of meal available and choice of dish so I'll go through each bit individually and give you examples of the type of food you can have!

SNACKS
For a quick bite this is the place. At £3 for a plateful you can't complain.

Vegetarian - vegetables and béchamel sauce flan with French fries - £3

Cold sandwiches £2
This is a variety of Hungarian salami and smoked sausages or cheese and ham with fresh vegetables of your choice. It's served in a French baguette and comes with a variety of toppings, relishes, salads and mustards that are left on your table for you to pick away at.
Bit of a bargain for £2.

MAIN COURSES
This is where the place comes into its own. At lunchtime the main courses are only £3.75 and they are £4.75 in the evening when the portions are even bigger! At lunchtime you can get a 2-course lunch for £4.75 or a 3-course lunch for £6.75. Excellent value for money! Some examples are:

Brassoi apropecsene -
strips of pork with garlic and seasonings served with roast peppers and French style mixed vegetables. I've had this for lunch and it's quite a plateful. Lots of lovely tender pork and it fills you up for a day shopping!

Szekely kaposzta - Sauerkraut and smoked gammon in a blend of pork goulash, an original Transylvanian recipe.

Roast wild boar - MY FAVOURITE! Tender slices of wild boar served with a game style sauce, potato croquettes and French style mixed vegetables. The boar is fantastic and you get 4 good slices at lunchtime. At dinner you get even more and it is gorgeous!

DESSERTS
The desserts are extremely cheap at £1.75 so popping in for tea/coffee and dessert is a great idea! For example -

Gundel palacsinta - flavoured walnut puree in folded Hungarian pancake, served hot with chocolate cream. Mmmmmmmm?????..

Meggyes piskota - pitted morello cherries in a light sponge cake served with either vanilla cream or ice cream.

Tuors palacsinta - sweetened cream cheese in a blend of raisins, vanilla and lemon juice in a folded pancake. Served hot with vanilla custard.

Fruit strudels - of course! There are at least two different varieties every day including apple, cherry and pear.

Vegetarians are also catered for with a separate menu including deep fried Edam, fried courgettes and risotto, vegetarian goulash and pepper stew.

There is the normal range of coffee and tea including Hungarian coffee (with a bit of rum!).

This is an excellent place to go to for lunch and/or dinner. It's situated right in the middle of town so you can pop in during your shopping trip or before you head out on the town for the night. The prices are so reasonable its fantastic and students and OAPs get even more of a bargain with special discounts. The owners work in the restaurant and do all the cooking. They are true Hungarians with the most wonderful rich accents and a ve
ry eclectic style of serving. Don't be in a rush when you come here, imagine you are actually in Europe where you are encouraged to relax and enjoy the dining experience. I can guarantee they will make you smile!
