Advantages: Huge Portions

Disadvantages: Not the best quality ever

The Hungry Horse chain of pubs are not expensive, they are not classy and they are not for those on a diet, but on the plus side, they are wonderful value for money, offer large portions of reasonable food and you don't have to book ahead or queue.

Located around the UK, I have visited one in Claydon Suffolk on a couple of occasions, about 3 minutes off of the A14 it has decent parking facilities and is a good sized pub meaning you are almost guaranteed a seat when you visit.

Drinks:

Drinks are very reasonably priced, I got a pint of lager for under £2 and a coke which could be refilled for £1.30 on my visit, there was a decent selection of spirits, beers and wines and a bottle of wine could be purchased for about £7 which is really good value.

Service:

You order your food at the bar and get a number, the food is then brought to you when cooked, service is therefore adequate and nothing more, but it suits the chain perfectly and this is in no way a criticism of the service, just a comment that it is simple and understated.

Food:

The food varies from full pizzas to fish and chips to fried chicken, burgers, ribs, pasta etc, there are a number of options and you can pay extra to go jumbo which means you will get a plate larger than your car wheels filled with food. There are chips galore, 20 odd onion rings cost less than £3 and a main should come to less than £7. The food is definitely quantity over quality and I had the jumbo fish and chips which was enormous and easily enough for 2 for under £6.

We tried the desserts but they were too much, filled with chocolate, Ice Cream and loads of other sweet things, the dessert cost less than £3.40 and was very nice if not over the top.

Overall:

Overall its great value, is really filling and incredibly large portions. I enjoyed my visit though my partner felt it was fatty, unhealthy and cooked from frozen. It all depends on your tastes, if you want a lot on a budget, this is wonderful value, if you want quality over size, give this a miss.
