      Divine veggie and vegan food

I've been a vegetarian for the past 16 years and hadn't been to a veggie restaurant before until the end of last year, which set me off visiting all my local restaurants to compare. I've since turned vegan so I will give my opinion from both aspects.

Jack Sprats is based in Heaton, Newcastle on the main road and has lots of free parking in nearby streets. It's very much a homely cafe / restaurant with a slightly hippyish vibe. It's family run and has very polite welcoming members of staff.

On my first visit I went with my recently turned veggie boyfriend and we enjoyed starters of Pea fritters which were gorgeous and potato skins which was also very nice but your typical starter. On my second visit with my veggie mam and non meat eating sister they all enjoyed stuffed potatoes whilst I had an abosiltely divine vegan creamy mushroom pate with toast and salad. It was so flavoursome and moreish.

For mains on my first visit by other half opted for the Jack Sprats burger which has turned into his favourite meal. It is stacked high with all sorts of things from onion rings to olives! It came with a mozeralla, tomato and basil salad and the best chips ever, so golden and home made they are to die for. I had the sunday night which was very tasty but I find the sosmix pie slice can be very filliing as I find it stodgy yet tasty all the same. On my second visit I tried the vegan fish and chips with mushy peas and went to heaven! It is so similar to the real thing, the texture and taste, it even had a crispy skin made from seaweed, delicious batter, I am since having cravings for it and can't wait for my next batch! My sister enjoyed a mushroom and spinach tagliatelle.

For dessert we all had the vegan bakewell tart which was sooooo tasty we ended up buying extra to have the following day. I enjoyed a millionaires shortcake but this was a lot smaller and no competition for the bakewell tart.

Typically a starter is around £4, mains from £6-8 and desserts £1.50-4.00. They do a light snacks day menu but we've always had the evening menu and take away items.

Overall a lovely cosy place and by far the best veggie restaurant for miles. Their vegan breakfast was recently came in the top ten in the country!
